If you have access to Norton Anti-Virus (2001 or 2002) or Norton
System Works (2001 or 2002) then that's what I recommend.

NSW will include NAV.

Once installed, NAV will update itself and use the most recent scan
engine and virus definition files. Don't let the age of the product
fool you.

*Very bad advice*

NAV (& McAffee) are very poor products

don't even consider it!!!!

Read the reviews posted all over usenet!

To Everyone:

Wow! Such great responses, and so many of them! Thank you all VERY much.
Not sure which option I'll choose at this point, but I do so much appreciate
all the advice and suggestions!

My husband has Win 98 and had AVG (free) anti-virus in it, but had the old
(7.1) version. We've been trying to download their current version (7.5)
and twice it got almost finished (takes a LONG time, he has dial-up) and
there was a problem and it quit. Does anyone know if perhaps that version
of AVG isn't compatible with Win 98? Thanks for any help or suggestions

Agreed.

(Actually, with my experience, I'll allow an exception for the Symantec
corporate enterprise version.)

second that

I've been running NSW 2002 / NAV 2002 on Win-98 systems for 5 years.

While I agree that newer versions of NAV were designed more
specifically for XP and are very bad from a system-performance point
of view, I have found that NAV/NSW 2002 to be a great anti-virus
solution that is essentially free if you can find a NAV/NSW 2002 CD.

NAV 2002 is very efficient and works well on Win-98 and has
practically no impact on system performance.

How many people here have any recent experience with NAV 2002 and
Win-98?

You're all talking out of your hat, and you're all talking about more
recent versions of NAV that I agree are horrible.

Yes, I have some win-98 systems that run Symantec corporate (version 8
I think, maybe 9). That product has no expiry date, but otherwise I
see little difference (from a performance or resource-usage point of
view) vs NAV 2002.

I have had bad experiences with 2002, also. Go back to 2000, maybe...

I have had direct experience with NAV 2002, yes. Recent, no. Why, because it
caused headaches and I took it off and never went back...ever!

I should add that it was nothing to do with XP and everything to do with
Norton himself leaving the scene. They turned it into a gorilla sitting on
your shoulder to swat flies.
