Unwelcome Freezes with Windows Media Player

Hello to everyone.

I'm running a 5-year-old Compaq Presario with a Pentium II chip, and I've
upgraded this to Windows ME. After much tinkering, I've managed to restore
this system so that it generally runs much better than before. But a few
trouble spots remain.

One of these is that the system seems to hang whenever I try to re-size an
active Windows Media Player window, or whenever I close Media Player. The
only way I can then get the system to function again is through a warm
reboot. I've upgraded Media Player components to the most recent that WinME
will accept: the Version 9 series.

Not long ago, I loaded Norton Antivirus 2003 onto the system as well, and it
seems to do an adequate job of virus protection. But in some way might this
Symantec product be in conflict with something in ME or in WinMP to cause
hang-ups? Does anyone have a suggestion?

I have had problems with Norton Internet Security 2005 on my windows Me
also.
I had it to the shop twice.
I ended up getting a refund for Norton Internet Security 2005, and just went
with the Norton Antivirus 2005, that seemed to help a lot, but it still
freezes up to where you have to just push the on and off switch on the
tower.
I know that you need virus protection. But I hate the freeze ups.

Few if any Symantec products work correctly when installed on Win Me with
the later versions of NAV being amongst the worst for causing problems.
Personally I would recommend that you look for alternative AV and firewall
products. I don't however think that your AV or firewall application are
likely to be causing you your problems with WMP unless the hang up is
caused by WMP attempting to access the net, perhaps looking for available
updates or a codec, and you are blocking this at your firewall.

AVG7 is spot on,no problems at all.
Stop using win media player,It's crap.
My pc always freezes when I try to use it.
I just downloaded Realplayer v10,its perfect
and I set it up so everything,audio,video,mp3
etc all play through it.

Try turning off 'licensing' connection option........actually uncheck
everything in the options windows. Try 'Ultra player' it is an older,
small footprint player. Video and audio. RID YOURSELF OF ALL THINGS NORTON.
