Successfully Replacing IExplorer with Opera
Thank you to the person who recommended using Opera 9.64 on my Win98
machine. Opera as a browser is FAST, and doesn't hang with all of the new whizbang new fluff put into the latest websites assuming everybody is now running WinXP. Plus, and for me this is a big plus, Opera saves *any* website html's in a single mht format, whereas IE on many of these same websites would try for a long time and then present that stupid error message that it can't save the webpage. Opera has saved all these same web pages for me. Opera has the fantastic feature of letting you go to, open new window, or save contents of any link you find. The power of this is incredible as you do a search on google and open as many windows as you want WITHOUT losing your original list. Plus you can easily 'stack' multiple downloads. I used to have to do 1 at a time using IE. One heads up: [this is my opinion only] because Win98 doesn't allow later versions of Adobe, there is sometimes a hang/bomb when you hit the latest .pdf websites. Something's changed with acrobat, I've even found my Adobe can't open the latest forms from the IRS website any longer and I had to download a third party reader for that function. And, and this is often enough to be irritating, a .pdf website opened using the Opera sometimes will totally lock up the Win98 to the point of rebooting, sometimes so extreme, power off rebooting. But, to get around this, I ALWAYS select 'save contents of link' option, put the document into the appropriate folder, and open it later. Since doing that, have had absolutely no more hangs. Anyway, to any happy Win98 users that have problems with IE and the internet, I highly recommend trying Opera. Robert |

Go figure. Yesterday I downloaded 3 .pdf files from the DoE. Not one will open on this machine. All say the file is damaged or such. Yet, on my WinXP [shudder] running Adobe 8, the files open very well. Also, Adobe seems to have 'improved' their reader by removing the tiny little fist that moves the image around. I sure miss that little fist, very difficult using the side bars and arrow keys. Adobe must be learning from MS about how to improve a product [NOT!] by removing good features. But, now I can't find my .pdf reader I used last year! Worse, I can't find my pdf to text converter. I need to pull sections out of this huge document. Any ideas which one will open these new format .pdf's? Or, what will do the pdf to doc conversions? Uh, free of course. Robert |
