Hidden Files

I’ve tried to search within prior Posts for the surest ways to change File
Attributes in order to see or deal with Hidden Files, but have come up with
not-so-clear ways for getting this done.
Folder View Options do not seem to give me full control.
To start with, what are the exact sequence(s) and wording of commands to
issue? I would venture in guessing that not all may work while Windows is in
control and issuing them via Start|Run|etc., or if simply switching to DOS
Prompt from the START Menu.
Would they be successful in Safe Mode or would I have to re-boot to C:\
Prompt and get to the appropriate Directory to issue the appropriate(?)
Commands?
Incidentally, would the same Commands and procedures work with Windows2000
Pro?

It's BEST to let the System & Hidden attributes alone, as Gekko said. In some folders & files, they have a function & purpose. For instance, the fonts folder won't function well without at least System. Just do as AlmostBob said... "START button, Settings, Folder Options, View tab". Bolt "Show all files", & uncheck "Hide file extensions...".

What particular file are you trying to see?

Thanks to all for responding!

In past posts, that I’ve failed to get back to, I came across someone’s
suggestion to use the following quick method to clean up files that may be
created or modified during Internet sessions. Prior to that, I would normally
navigate to individual Folders and delete whatever I could. The suggested
method, executed after re-booting to the DOS Prompt, appeared to clean up
quite fast and well.
I have been using this method for some time and have had no problems other
than for the occasinal and unusual behavior of the Recycle Bin. I would have
to recreate the instance of this, but there are times when, after the
execution of the Batch File and consequent normal re-Start, the Icon of the
Recycle Bin shows that it is not empty, yet no files appear in the pane, when
the Bin is opened.
Is there some commands missing in this Batch File, like some wrong settings
of Attributes? Should there be a line with some commands to change any of
them?

That is normal, IF there was an item(s) in the Bin when it was DELTREEd. They will be invisible, but apparently still incredibly in there. The icon show occupied! Use the Bin's File menu to "Empty Recycle Bin", is all-- NOT that I quite can recommend the procedure you do!

If you want the Bin emptied, JUST R-Clk it, & "Empty Recycle Bin". If you want sometimes not to put a deleted item into the Bin, hold SHIFT as you click to delete it. That item goes to oblivion. If you never want a thing in it, R-Clk it, Properties, bolt 'Use one setting...', & check 'Do not move files to the Recycle Bin'. All items go to oblivion.

I DOUBT a pending install would complete, until you have reboot to Windows, not to DOS. Therefore, you may delete something in...

....that is needed to complete an install.

You may set Temporary Internet Files to delete automatically, at... Control Panel, Internet Options, Advanced tab, Security section.

START button, Find, F/F, Tempor~ That's tilde (~)
How many "Temporary Internet Files" show up?

If more than one, delete the ones in the Find box that you can. The real one won't delete that way. To move it...

(a) "Control Panel, Internet Options, Settings button"
Where does it say Temporary Internet Files are located?
That is the REAL one.
(b) "START, Find, F/F".
(c) Enter "Tempor~1" (no quotes) in "Named".
(d) Click the "Advanced" button, & use the dropdown to select
"Folder".
(e) Then click the "Find Now" button.
If you have more than one "Temporary Internet Files" folder, you
may delete the one's that are not real.

Then, If TIFs are not where you want them, here's how to move it to
"C:\Windows\"...

1. Close all open windows, except Internet Properties if still open.
2. "Control Panel, Internet Options, Settings button"
3. Click "Move Folder"
4. In "Browse for Folder" requestor:
a. Click plus to left of C:
b. Highlight "Windows"
c. Click OK
5. It will ask; give it permission to re-boot

After this, if you already had a set in the destination folder, it may
not have been wiped completely. Therefore...

"Control Panel, Internet Options, Delete Files button, check 'Delete all
offline content', OK, Apply, OK". May as well click to clear "History"
while there.

Now, TIFs are where you want them, and all is well with the world.
Better check on it now/then, though, as mine have snuck back to
"C:\WINDOWS\Local Settings" twice-- probably after taking an IE
Cumulative at Windows Update,-- although the later ones haven't done
that.

I use & recommend Ccleaner, it cleans everything in one click.
(normally i wouldnt 'recommend', but this one has been a friend
and never let me down; i use it daily and definately prior to a defrag)
(never known it to take more than 2 seconds.)

ps, have one icon for a bin with something in it, and another for an empty
bin; you can keep tabs on occupiency.
directly after running Ccleaner, my icon changes to the empty version.

I have had nor feel to have any reason to do more than just empty the Bin,
which I end up doing, anyway. If it is normal for the Bin to show that is
occupied after executing the Batch File in question, this might explain why
at times I happen to notice that the Bin is occupied, but no Files are shown
and the Restore Option is not available. However, the option for emptying it
is still available.

Not sure what you mean by 'pending install'. Perhaps my comment was not very
clear. I execute the Batch File upon re-Starting to the MS-DOS Mode, or
C:\Prompt, from the Windows Shut-Down Menu.

I would not know what would be safe to do with the options available in the
Security Section and I rather leave it alone. Often, I open the IE and Delete
Cookies and Internet Files, Clear History and, in the Content Menu, I go to
Auto Complete and Clear Forms and Passwords.

| Incidentally, I believe that tempor~2 was created by the System after the
| tempor~1 was deleted, by ‘who knows’ what method. The last line was added

| It's BEST to let the System & Hidden attributes alone, as Gekko said. In some folders & files, they have a function & purpose. For instance, the fonts folder won't function well without at least System. Just do as AlmostBob said... "START button, Settings, Folder Options, View tab". Bolt "Show all files", & uncheck "Hide file extensions...".
