Default new entry in context menu gone

A while after installing new video drivers I noticed that the "new"
entry in my context menu (that which appears if I rightclick in a
folder) is gone.

When using Google I find a lot of articles about adding that entry to
Windows98SE by editing the registry - but I found nothing specific to
WIndows ME that I´m using.

Is the entry identical that needs to be added to the registry?

This used to be a quite common problem when installing video drivers from
nVidia where for some reason the installer (rather than the drivers
themselves) deletes more of the contents of the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\Directory key than just the branch
involved with New Folders.

I have attached a zip file containing a registry file (directory.reg) that
when extracted from the zip file and merged with the registry should restore
all of the functionality you lost when installing your drivers.

Thankyou for your offer - however I hesitated to download and merge some
unknown file. But in the meantime I found the answer on the german
microsoft site:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=180257

or english
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/180257/EN-US/

and when I edited that entry into the registry using regedit my new
command was there again :-)

That's good to read. Nevertheless check that you didn't lose more than just
the right click "New" option following your driver install. You don't need
to actually merge the reg file I posted but instead you can open it in a
text viewer such as Notepad and compare the various keys and their data for
the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\Directory
with those in your system using regedit.

Incidentally, Microsoft Knowledge Base references such as
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=180257
open in the users default language and only need the addition of /en-us/
where the user's default language is other than English and the user wishes
to view the English version of the KB.
