Wheel Mouse won't work. Driver?? BTC M370
Big Mac wrote:
All buttons work like they are supposed to including "pressing" the wheel as a button - but not "scrolling" the wheel.. I believe there Here is an update. Still no wheel working. Two different wheel mice tried. Everything else normal. (1) No reference to any wheel when choosing control-panel\mouse (2) The maker of my mouse wrote back to me & told me to use the standard PS/2 default driver (3) Though a "mouse" selection did not show up in normal mode in control-panel\system\devices as it should (everything else does, monitor, keyboard, etc), I took the advice of a reply & booted into safe mode. In safe mode in the same area, "mouse" was now present. I then saw 2 drivers loaded. A regular PS/2 driver, and one that said "PS/2 wheel". So I deleted the regular driver. Rebooted. "Mouse" didn't show up in system\devices, just as before. Tried to scroll a web page on the Internet. Nothing. Same as before. Went back into safe mode, saw "mouse", deleted the PS/2 wheel mouse driver. Now no driver was loaded. Rebooted. The mouse worked as before - no scrolling - wheel does not work. Went back into safe mode - now, even in safe mode, control-panel\system\devices - "mouse" is invisible just like it was in normal mode. So now I can't even see what driver is loaded in safe mode. (4) unplugged the mouse, & booted. Windows 98 told me I did not have a mouse connected. Great. The auto detect was working. Plugged the mouse back in. Same f**king thing. No wheel. No "mouse" listed anywhere to see what driver is loaded, not even in safe mode. When I 1st bought this computer, I am pretty sure the wheel did work. But then re-install of Windows several times (not the wiping install - it kept folders/configs), I am not sure when I lost the wheel function. Then a old HP mouse was put on (non-wheel, & it detected it & installed a driver. If I deleted all mouse drivers, what driver could be loaded, since the mouse still works as before. Though it detected before when I removed the mouse, I never saw anything say "detected mouse, installing driver". The good news is I am going to live. The bad news is I can't see what driver (if any) is loaded in mouse, and the wheel still doesn't work. I am going to try the teakUI suggested next. Big Mac |

Keep us informed. Have you looked in...?... (1) "START, run, MSInfo32, Tools tab, Automatic Skip Driver Agent" for a clue? Examine the screen. What shows up highlighted in the left/right panes? What are all the choices? I have been there before (#2). Several times. But thanks for making me go back again. Yes, there were many choices there, different companies. No intellimouse though or M$ as others have suggested. I had tried a few & was successful in loading them. But no scroll wheel function. This time back in there though, I tried another driver to load. It wanted a disk with a serial number to load it. No good. I tried another - now, even though the mouse in question is a PS/2 mouse, I selected a standard serial mouse. Well guess what?! It worked! I now can see mouse as a choice in control-panel\system. And the serial mouse is loaded. And best of all, the scroll wheel now works! A small drawback, but at least I know I can eventually get the right driver - in control-panel\mouse, there still is no "wheel" selection. So I am stuck at the default "3 lines" per scroll clip (I believe that is default). I'd like to bump it up to 5 or 6 lines. But now I know things are not all screwed up, & I'll be able to (hopefully) find a good driver, and one that will change the mouse icon window to give me a "wheel" selection of changing lines per scroll movement. I tried loading other drivers before from there, but I guess they never took, and thus no "mouse" selection in control-panel\system. This time I had a Win 98 CD in the D: drive, so maybe it read from there, but I really don't know. It must be that without any mouse driver at all loaded, the basic 3 button mouse functions still work for any mouse (??) - at least for the two PS/2 mice I tried. Thanks again for making me re-visit where I needed to be & try something else, Big Mac |

You are welcome. I am sure you are right, that you need something 3rd
party to add tabs to "Control Panel, Mouse"... I have a "Readme" that says (speaking of a Device Manager remove of the mouse)... .......Quote.............. Windows 9x and Windows NT 4.0 have the ability to load device drivers without running the Setup program. Loading the devices drivers this way, however, does not install the user interface programs such as the Logitech Enhanced Mouse Control Center. Using the "Have Disk" function will install only the Logitech mouse drivers. .......End of quote..... But, even with my tabs, I am set at the default of 3 line scrolling & like it. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Big Mac" wrote in message ... | On Wed, 9 Jun 2004 15:48:40 -0400, "PCR" wrote: | Keep us informed.
