Default Windows Temporary Internet Files -clearing persistent files

Using IrfanView to explore image the content of my Windows/Temporary
internet files/Content.IE5/folders reveals a large number of images
that do not relate to any recently viewed pages.

I have used the Properties dialogue boxes of IE to Delete Files (incl
all off line content) and though this clears all recent viewed pages
these older images, various gif, css, buttons, logos etc remain.

I also cleared all pages saved for off line viewing but this too has
had no effect on removing these persistent items.

The pages these fiiles relate to cannot - AFAIK be viewed.

How have these images - jpegs, gifs, buttons etc got stuck in this
folder and immune to removal?

Can I simply delete the randomly named folders or their content
without causing any problems?

Roger
