Problem with OE
My Sister has a problem with OE on her oldish PC that has Windows ME. I
think that she has OE 5.5. One of her main issues is that she can't delete items from her outbox. Her ISP 'Help line' has told her that she needs to upgrade to IE6. As she is on a slow dial-up connection, is there a website where I could download IE6 and put it on a CD for her? I am only able to find the MS Installer via the web. TIA, Willy |

Suggested fix for Outbox problem.
Copy/Move all posts that your sister wants to save to another local OE folder. Close Outlook Express. Using Windows Explorer look for the file Outbox.dbx and rename to Outbox.old Start Outlook Express. A new empty Outbox folder will automatically be created. Send a test post Did OE send the message? Is the Outbox now empty? If yes then your sister has solved her problem and can now safely delete the file Outbox.old. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP willy wrote: My Sister has a problem with OE on her oldish PC that has Windows ME. Willy, the IE6 setup files are on the AOL8 CD, at the
AOL8/Browsers/MSIE/MSIE6ME.exe beginning. Noel Paton has reported the IE6 files are very embedded in the AOL9 disk, making that disk almost useless for your purpose. After using this disk to install IE6, you will still have to use the Win Update site to upgrade to SP1 and the additional patches. I urge you and your friend to upgrade to IE6 due to the better security features. -- Jack E. Thanks Jack,
Unfortunately I'm in Australia and don't have AOL Willy Jack E Martinelli wrote: Willy, the IE6 setup files are on the AOL8 CD, at the AOL8/Browsers/MSIE/MSIE6ME.exe beginning. Peruse MVP Noel Paton's site at http://winnoel.users.btopenworld.com
for a link or source to the IE6 setup files, preferably with SP1. If no luck, e-mail him using the site feedback tool, as he is very knowledgeable about the reinstallation of IE6. Before doing so, you may wish to utilize a possible source closer to your home by contacting MVP Sandi Hardmeier, in Perth, Aust, who may have a source, too: http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/ She is bona fide IE/OE expert, who is very helpful, with a wonderful sense of humor (humour?) Of course, you can always post a request for help in one of the MS IE or OE newsgroups. In the worse case, send me your mailing address, by unmunging my e-mail address in the header of this post, and I will mail a English-language AOL 8 CD to you. -- Jack E. Jack,
The poster's query is not about reinstalling IE but rather that the PC involved is on dial-up and the user wants to download all the IE files on another PC and burn to CD for use on the dial-up PC. To be honest I can think of no good reason why the user would want to use an AOL8 CD. vbg Better IMO would be a copy of the (now withdrawn) Microsoft security update CD. Willy, See http://www.petri.co.il/download_the_full_ie_package.htm for details of how to download the full IE6SP1 package. This method uses iesetup.exe which can be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Centre or via the link on the page at www.petri.co.il. Not knowing the system you will be using to download IE6SP1 use the command /c:"ieXwzd.exe /d:1 /s:""#E" if you are not running Win Me on the system doing the downloading rather than the /c:"ieXwzd.exe /d /s:""#E" mentioned in the article. Do this and you will be able to select the various operating systems on which you wish to install the download. The Win Me only download is 13.2MB with the full package being 50MB. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Jack E Martinelli wrote: Peruse MVP Noel Paton's site at http://winnoel.users.btopenworld.com for a link or source to the IE6 setup files, preferably with SP1. Mike, Jack,
Thanks for your prompt replies, it looks like re-creating the outbox etc. has done the trick so far. If necessary, I'll take the other path.... Sincere thanks for your help. Willy,
Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad to read you've fixed the immediate problem. I suspected that repairing the Outbox would solve the problem as this is a not unfamiliar problem with Outlook Express due to the "fragility" of the dbx files used in the message store. Nevertheless I would still urge your sister to upgrade to IE6 SP1 as whilst OE still uses the same dbx files, IE6 is considerably improved over what went before and is less vulnerable to unwanted assault when browsing the web. Cheers and best wishes, -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP willy wrote: Mike, Jack, Thanks for your prompt replies, it looks like re-creating the outbox etc. has done the trick so far. Willy, I concur again with Mike about your sister upgrading to IE6 SP1.
This is important. Mike, I think I understood what Willy wanted to do. I was trying to direct him to a source for the IE6 setup files. The only rational use for the AOL8 disk is to retrieve the IE6 installation files for WinME (or Win98 or W2K). One can then copy them to CD and burn the AOL disk (i,e., put the disk in a fire!). -- Jack E.
