Try this instead
http://www.google.co.uk/search?as_q=...ghts=&safe=off

or
http://tinyurl.com/aqv9v

(it works better, anyhowg)

I've flagged it - hopefully we'll either get a new link, or they'll
reinstate the old one

Add this one to the list, as well.

I can agree with most things in that site - but NOT sections 8, 9 or
16...... (more later - most likely tomorrow)
Section 18 is redundant if you're done the reinstall properly, as it should
have corrected any errors in the VMM32.vxd file - and if you haven't done
it properly, then the chances are that IE won't work)

As far as the tweaking section goes (#19) - most of those programs are not
worth the paper that they're written on (before printing!!)
I could list the problems, but I consider it a waste of everyone's time.
so I'll list the programs worth thinking about ( in the right
circumstances!!)
Adaware (properly called Ad-Ware, since a program called adaware also floats
around, and is a VERY bad thing!) - www.lavsoftusa.com
TweakUi - from (and ONLY from) -
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstati.../nttweakui.asp
Belarc Advisor from http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Trend Micro's House Call at http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall

ALL of the others are unnecessary and in some cases WILL lead to problems!!
If you have problems with Scandisk - find out what's causing the problem,
rather than working around it - the chances are that it's slowing your
system down anyhow!
System Restore should NEVER be removed - although there are circumstances
under which it may be appropriate to disable it.
CacheMan is an accident waiting to happen (flames, awaitedg)
WinRescue is total BS.
RamPage WILL kill your system if you give it half a chance
etc.... etc....

Really, H - I thought we had you better educated than this!!
I can see that I'm going to have to create another page of my own!

Noel,

I think you meant to type Ad-Aware. :-) I also suspect you meant to type
www.lavasoftusa.com as the URL you typed is likely to end up with the user
downloading unwanted adware rather than Ad-Aware. g

What strikes me, Mike (and Noel) - bearing also in mind that Butthead so far
appears to be backing down soliciting hjt logs (perhaps I was too specific)
in aca-v, but clearly not from hosting-without-permission etc, which frankly
he's unlikely to stop as long as people shame him rather than frighten him -
is that maybe people like Lavasoft, PepiMK, Merijn etc should provide their
freeware tools to ISPs - or OEMs - to bundle. Make the updaters sufficiently
error-free that, if the servers cannot be contacted, the updater tells one
so, and that there's no point seeking an alternative source.

For your comfort, Noel, I think that we've learned more with your *typos*,
than we would have without them,
thanks to Mike's intervention, of course.

Harry.

Noel,

To be honest I was surprised to see you posting as I thought that you were
living it up in Manchester tonight and perhaps posting from someone's
laptop in a pub only to then realise that the knees up is tomorrow
evening. :-)
