You know when you go to shut down Windows and sometimes a dialogue box pops up and says, This program is not responding or is waiting for a response from you..." and then at the bottom, you can choose to "End Task" "Wait" or "Cancel". Well, the program in which this dialogue box refers to is written in the bar at the top of the window. However, I have encountered times when there is no program written there...it's blank! So, I have no idea what program is not responding and my computer freezes up until I get the blue screen that says, "The system is busy or has become unstabe..." and then I have to Ctrl Alt Del to restart Windows.

Does anyone know what program this dialogue box refers to? Thanks in advance.

No. Does it happen often? Close all apps yourself, before you shut down.
Does it still happen? Perhaps, examine you Startup Group...

First pick one of these to identify what loads at boot. Next, see
whether there is an option in it's menus to disable it from starting up.
If you really want to rid yourself of it on a more permanent basis, then
look for it in "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs". However, it isn't
often easy to know what is what in there. One of these URL's may say.
Only last, go to StartUpCop.

Here's the funny thing...it only seems to do this when I come here to this site. I'm wondering whether it has something to do with Java? Whwn I close my Internet Explorer, it stays running in the back ground, and when I "End Task" then this dialogue box comes up that does not say what program is not responding. It's wierd...but only when I come here (that I've noticed so far).

Java! I don't know! Is it mentioned anywhere?

Well, I do not access this NG through the CDO interface as you do. I am
here through Outlook Express. One thing: When I am ready to shut down, I
shut OE first-- or crash--, & it could take a full 15 seconds to shut
OE.

Shut IE, & wait for it's button to disappear from the Taskbar, before
you try to shut down. Don't hit Ctrl-Alt-Del before it's gone, because
everything is suspended while that box is open. Once it's gone from the
Taskbar, does it still show at Ctrl-Alt-Del? What is the wording in
there? For instance, opened to...
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
....I see "Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File". But that one
disappears quickly, when IE is closed.

Perhaps...
"START, Run, MSInfo32, Tools menu, IE Repair Tool"
It produces a rather large "Fix IE Log.txt" in C:\Windows. IE & E
are basically one & the same. If this crashes, an over-install of IE is
indicated.
