Hi Tom,

I don't know why you should be calling yourself a moron for getting an
error message.

If you have a WindowsME boot floppy (or can make one on the computer
that you're on now or go to www.bootdisk.com and download one) you can
type in

SCANREG /RESTORE

and pick a Registry restore point from the last few times you booted up
(maximum of 5), or if that's not an option (or as an alternative)

SCANREG /FIX

See if that does any good.

Rick

I don't think I've ever seen somebody ignored on purpose... but there's
only maybe 2 or 3 people who regularly post here that know what they're
talking about all the time and 4-5 who know what they're talking about
some of the time and most of the rest of us just help you to figure it
out if it's not too difficult.

Boot your computer with your WindowsMe emergency startup disk and have
the Windows Me installation disk handy.

While the computer is booting from the emergency startup disk watch
the screen carefully. Near the end of the bootup process it will tell
you which drive letter has been assigned to the CDROM drive. It will
likely be different than the letter that is used by Windows for the
CDROM drive.

When the computer has finished booting and has stopped at the A:\
prompt enter the following command:

DIR C:\KRNL386.EXE /S /P

It may take a couple of minutes to process the command (it is
searching the entire hard drive). If it reports "file not found" then
we need to replace the file from the Windows Me CD. If it finds the
file then that indicates that there is some other problem involved and
we need to pursue that further. In that event post the information
about the krnl386.exe file back here, including the location, file
size, and file date.

Assuming that it reports "file not found":
Put the Windows Me CDROM disk into the drive. The following sample
commands assume that the boot disk has assigned drive letter E: to the
CDROM drive.

Enter the following commands:
PATH C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND
E:
CD\WIN9X
EXTRACT /Y /A /L C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM WIN_16.CAB KRNL386.EXE

When the file has been replaced and the system has returned to the
command prompt remove the boot disk and the Windows Me and then press
Ctrl+Alt+Delete to reboot the computer.

Good luck

Correction: No one has a nice quick easy answer you will like
....because there are some hairy causes for this sort of thing.

I have a blue screen that says" can not find or load required file
KRNL386.EXE the file was not found system halted"

See http://cquirke.mvps.org/pccrisis.htm - don't write to the system
or attempt to run Windows until you verify your hardware's OK etc.

Have did try to use the boot disk? If so did you follow
one of the set of instructions from one of the previous
posts? If you need to get back into windows to save
anything then you could repair windows through using
another install over the other original version. Just
follow the prompts.
Good Luck.
