On the general tab, system properties, does it say 4.10.1998? If so, it
appears the system was installed from a 1998 disk and not your SE disk

It does say 4.10.1998. The sleeve has a red star that
says "second edition updated and improved". I have since
looked at a friends SE disc and the disc itself says SE. I
have two of these discs that were used on two different
computers and they both have the same .1998. If memory
serves me we bought them at Fry's Electronics. The
computers are home built. I could scan this sleeve and
send you a picture of it.

The sleeve is not important--I think it's what's on the CD itself (second
edition) that is important. I don't believe you will find that those are MS
sleeves either.

they are definitely MS sleeves purchased through a retai
outlet, I'm not making this up. I disagree with you in
what's important because when you're standing in the aisle
of the store you don't get to see or read the CD, you have
to trust what's on the package. As offered before I can
scan the sleeve and send anyone a picture. it's also
notable that the CD key on the back of the sleeve matches
the CD. I have two of these in posession so I don't think
it's some random error either.

OK scan the sleeve, the CD label, the sales receipt (if you have it and it
is still readable) and the box the CD came in (if you have it). You can
find my email address by going to my web site--please do not post my address
in the newsgroup. Once I get the pictures, I will see what I can find out
for you.

My Win98SE OEM disk just says *Windows98*. No SE on the
disk. But it is 98SE.
Right click on MY Computer and select properties. The
first-General-page will state if it is SE or not.
