Lost the right click *new* function
http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/assets/images/New.zip
This .zip file contains a .reg file that will fix the problem. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Box Top" wrote in message ews.com... This one has me completely stumped and I don't know how or why but somehow I "lost" the function of creating *new*! Under menu tab, if you right click on say FILE within a folder you have the option of making a *new* folder/text or other, and you can can see various pgms listed too... Problem is... I can't see/make that *new* function anymore with a right click! What I see/get the same options as if the FILE is just left clicked open. What can I do to restore the right click and *new*?? Help!!!???? (Win98SE & TUI) |

Lost the right click *new* function
The show desktop file (that's its actual name) is in the Windows system

MANY THANKS to you!! Just curious, I have one other minor problem & maybe you might have a similar fix?? When one is buried in multiple open windows it's sometimes necessary to get back to just the desktop. I use to be able to see the desktop icon in "quick launch" just to the right of Start. But it's totally gone...Matter-o-fact, trying to drag/drop anything there doesn't work either. Drag/Drop... say a web-browser icon and window confirmation says: "folder already contains a file named Quick Launch...Replace existing file with this" ...If I say yes, I see nothing and still no desktop icon either. Any ideas here or am I SOL?? Again...My Thanks |

No it isn't. It is "Show Desktop.scf"
Look at this standard response: You can read this: How to Re-create the Show Desktop Icon on Quick Launch Toolbar http://support.microsoft.com/support.../q190/3/55.asp or try this: You have deleted the Show Desktop shortcut from the Quick Launch Bar. You should have a copy in the System folder, normally C:\Windows\System Just copy "Show Desktop.scf" to C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/index.html On Fri, 2 Dec 2005 15:59:28 -0400, "Haggis" wrote: "desktop.ini" isn't it ? Lost the right click *new* function

ews.com... Thanks for the quick re...First off, I may have a big problem here?? I deleted Internet Explorer in favor of using Firefox...so, much of that is gone. Continual patches of IE's flaws were getting to me!! High hopes you mean uninstalled IE, not deleted. You did not have to remove IE to use Firefox, a user can install/use multiple browsers. What I'm trying to do, and we may be getting lost because of no IE, or maybe too many trees in the forest, is this---Restore *only* 1 icon in quick launch--And that is the icon & the ability to click on it to restore the entire desktop. Maybe it's called..."Show Desktop"... Seeing multiple icons on the desktop within quick launch isn't what I'd like to have. With the directions I gave, Show Desktop will be the only link in QL. I made a new file called "Show Desktop.scf" and that was put in a new folder called "Quick Launch". The Path is C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch. There is also another file called Desktop.htt located in C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer. If you used SFC to extract the file, it should be extracted to C:\Windows\System. Otherwise if you followed the instructions in the link provided it should work, unless it's missing from the System folder. The desktop.htt belongs where it's at. Now....When I right click on Toolbar in the Quicklaunch & I have Quicklaunch checked...I can see a icon with windows-logo only and it's called... "Show Desktop"!! However, it doesn't do anything if you try to click it open... AND any open windows are now showing in quicklaunch as boxes too BUT with no title or picture icon on them. Only 1 click going from left to right brings back the name/icon. Check c:\windows\system to see if Show Desktop.scf is present. If not, use SFC or a zip app to extract a new one from the 98/SE install disk. Open apps should not appear in QL, they should appear on the Taskbar. YES!! I can get the individual desktop items to show in quicklaunch with "desktop" clicked in Toolbar, but I'm only trying get back a working "Show Desktop" icon and not more. Can you send a screenshot of the desktop/taskbar to: postmaster02 at comcast.net. It will help being able to see what you see. -- Brian A. Quick launch is just a folder with that folder designated as a toolbar. One can make *any* folder (or drive) a toolbar, whatever is in it becomes the "quick launch" stuff. -- dadiOH ____________________________ dadiOH's dandies v3.06... ....a help file of info about MP3s, recording from LP/cassette and tips & tricks on this and that. Lost the right click *new* function
Box Top wrote:
However, checking Toolbars Desktop does give me a Desktop insertion, and clicking that does bring me back to the desktop... Much-much closer to what I'd like but no QL "icons" quite yet.... I could live with this inserted if I can't recreate QL "icons". You are making a huge thing out of something that is really pretty simple. There is nothing special about "Quick Launch" - it is just a folder. The folder can be named thusly but doesn't have to be...it can be named anything. You place it on your task bar by right clicking the task bar, selecting "Toolbars", "New Toolbar" and browsing to whatever folder (or drive) you want to make a toolbar. Whatever is in that folder (or drive) be it other folders and/or files, apps and/or shortcuts to apps become the things available for selection. How they are displayed depends on the display characteristics you select for the new toolbar...large vs small icons, title/no title, text/no text. You can have numerous toolbars. Additionally, you can have up to four taskbars (one on each side of the monitor) and each can have numerous toolbars. I have three taskbars (all auto hide) with a total of 11 "quick launch" toolbars. You can also have toolbars on your desktop. For more info, see Windows Helptoolbar and/or my dandies (see below). -- dadiOH ____________________________ dadiOH's dandies v3.06... ....a help file of info about MP3s, recording from LP/cassette and tips & tricks on this and that.
