Default half of the window has disappeared?????

i un installed ie6.0 because of compatibility problems..and i cannot reach my
complete windows. i tried for sys restore and when it comes up, there is
nothing on the page.
the same for windows explorer. i get everything on the left side, but the
right side (choices) are not at all usuable, no reaction with the mouse or
tab key..
i downloaded 5.01 and 6.0 to try and restore the files but i get error
message "not able to complete installation" so the dadgum thing aborts...any
