Default HCF Modem

Connection problems persist: e.g. currently
downloading the latest modem manual from
AOpen and speed fell rapidly from 6 Kbs to 2 Kbs . . .
Half the time, first connection simply fails: on
2nd or subsequent attempts, it takes 60 to 120
seconds before good connection is reported.
This does not happen on the old PC upstairs,
connecting to the same ISP with the same
software (IE and OE v.6.)

/ Device Manager shows the modem twice:
as HCF Modem = AOpen PCI Modem Enumerator
as Modem = AOpen FM56-PLX Controllerless PCI Modem.

Is this generally OK, i.e. should the modem thus appear
twice in / Device Manager ? If so, I am undecided about
configuration, e.g. whether / Modem / Properties / Advanced
should be set for Hardware or Software flow control.
Google suggested www.modemsite.com as a likely
source: paid access but cheap.

Yes, you will normally see both in Device Manager....the Modem Enumerator, and the
modem itself. You should not see any "Other" category in D.M. though. Have you
looked there in Safe Mode?

Normally, the modem installation will set flow control where it wants it....where is
it set?
Have you enabled the logging option there, so you can read the modem log?

It could be a phone line problem. Try moving this computer upstairs
temporarily and connecting to the Internet via that phone connection.

I would leave the modem set to the factory settings, but I would also
make sure that the software was the latest available.

Go to
http://download.aopen.com.tw/downloa...nguage=English
Select Fax/Modems in the Product dropdown list, then FM56-PLX and
Driver

Good luck
