Default Install Win98SE over W95b or erase W95b?...and more!

Hi,

I have a home-built Cel 533 (O/C'd to 600) system with three 4.5GB SCSI
drives. The CD also runs off the SCSI bus. At this very moment, a
W98SE (full version) is winging its way to me from Winnipeg (via an eBay
transaction). It is an OEM version like the original W95b (OSR2).

I understand there are two choices for installing W98. Install it over
the W95 or make a clean install. I believe I have read about two ways
to do a clean install. 1) Reformat the C drive and then install. I
assume this will require me to completely reinstall all of my
applications. (Hopefully, I will have remembered to backup all the
data!) 2) Install to a seperate partition/drive. Does this have any
advantages if I do not plan on using W95 ever again? I would like to
get the HD space back if I can.

I read in another post of the possibility that W98 OEM will not install
over another operating system. True?

I have the Windows 95 Secrets book and have read enough of it to be
thoroughly confused but if there is anything in there I should look at,
let me know. I also have VCom's Drive Works Suite which includes
Partition Commander, Image Commander, Copy Commander, SecurErase, and
AutoSave (a supposedly automatic backup system). I also have Norton
SystemWorks for W98/W95 but have found that to be less usefull than I
expected.

I have a setup diskette made by the vendor that sold me most of the
equipment plus the W95OEM. It is labled W95 OSR/2 Setup Disk For PCI
SCSI CDROM. I am guessing this will work fine for me to setup W98 or
should I copy the SCSI driver to a W98 setup disk?

Since I have been running with a hardware conflict since I installed
something in the computer a while back, I plan on doing a sequential
reinstall of my devices after installing W98. (ISA modem card, powering
down - installing - powering up, then PCI sound card, etc.).

Any suggestions on the best strategy?

Background info in case it matters:
In addition to this project, I am getting two other computers and plan
on putting them all on a wireless network. Then I can port my work
files from the old computer onto my new work computer and some other
files to the new family computer. The old computer will then be used to
run some of the older, less demanding software for everyone in the
family. However, the only PCI wireless networking cards I have found
say they require W98 to run so I guess I can't do the porting first.

There is a very high probablity - on the order of 99 and 44/100% -
that your OEM version of Windows 98 SE will not do an upgrade install
so you should be planning on and preparing for a clean install.

See http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/upgrade.html for advice on
upgrading an existing install with an OEM version.

OEM versions are intended primarily for sale with new computers and
they are designed so as not to install on a computer that already has
an operating system in place because new computers do not have that.

Good luck

I've read Ron's answer to Ken G regarding the OEM issue. I wish I had
realized the OEM issue before I bought the W98SE. I hope it is not
customized?

Is it feasible to create a new partition, make that the boot partition,
and install W98? Then I can use the directory in the partition with W95
to guide me in reinstalling the old software and copying over data files.

Any wisdom on the other issues?

I forgot to ask if anyone could recommend a good book on W98SE to aid in
my future operating system trials.
