Default I.E. Version Win 98 and Win98SE

A friend of mine recently upgraded their Compuserve Program and it will not
work with Win 98 I.E. 4.0 Ver 4.72.3110. Compuserve instructed her to
upgrade to I.E. 5.0 or 6.0. Since she cannot get on line she cannot upgrade
through MS site, however she can order the CD.

Question is: Will the 6.1 CD upgrade her version of I.E. Also will Win
98SE upgrade the I.E. she has. What version of I.E. comes with Win98SE.

Thanks.

Yes. But further updates will be required once she gets back online. She should
immediately go to Windows Updates.

Also will Win 98SE upgrade the I.E. she has. What version of I.E. comes with

Win98SE.

Yes, to v.5.0.2314.1000, I believe. But that version is no longer supported--to
be safe, she'd have to update IE to at least v 5.5x. Still, this method would
get her back online and able to download v. 6.1.

I'd also recommend your friend find a different ISP. Allowing a program to
install without the prerequisites in place is irresponsable. If the Compuserve
software came on a disk, without including a minimally required version of IE,
that, too, is ridiculous.

Lastly, rather than wait for a CD from MS (or elsewhere), if you or another
friend have a CD burner, you could download a copy for her. This article tells
you how:
"Downloading Internet Explorer for a Different Operating System"
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=174680

As for downloading Internet Explorer 5.5 (which is still somewhat supported and
can still be updated, but not for much longer), I know it's possible, I just
can't remember the details

Gary:

Thank you very much for your assistance. I did get to download 6.1
from MS
and will try to load it tomorrow. I think I would rather go that way
then to
upgrade to 98SE.

She is not much of a surfer, only uses the Computer for business
purposes
and email.

She has a Compacq with 96 mb ram, AMD-K6 3d processor.

She purchased the computer about 4 to 5 years ago and has never backed
up
very important financial, business, spreadsheet and word docs. I got
her
important docs backed up. She did not know what thin ice she was
skating on,
if she had a HD failure she would be up the creek.

If I can't get I.E. going I am going to tell her it is about time to
replace
the computer with a decent operating system.

Thank you again for you assistance, it is very much appreciated.

This is the download page

http://browsers.evolt.org/download.p...P2/ie55sp2.exe

It appears that there are no US mirrors left.

The page lists 2 sites in the UK and one in OZ. Interesting, no?

I find it more disappointing than "interesting".
