Can I make a new partition on a HD and do a fresh install from the DOS prompt in that partition?
I have two hd's(C: and D C: came with my Dell PII and D: is newer and
bigger. I had BootitNG make a new 5GB partition on the D: drive(which has some data on it, in other partitions, already). My question is, when I am in DOS and the prompt is Fnew partition) and I run setup on my Windows 98 cd, will it only affect the F: partition? I started this process and setup ran, scanned all the drives and started to install 98 but I chickened out because I wasn't 100% sure where the new OS was going. Will it only go into F: and leave all else alone? Also, I hid all the other partitions in BootitNG. Thanks for your help, Steve |

I did try unplugging C:, changing jumpers on D: and installing Windows.
Unfortunately, I think I put the IE update on D: and the installation won't boot. I get error messages that system.ini is calling for files that are missing but I checked and they are there. I also get error messages that make me think the new windows is using the autoexec from my old windows. Mostly because it can't find the anitvirus file that is only on C: and has not been installed yet. The other thing that happened is when I plugged C: back in the new Windows Explorer wouldn't show it. This felt like a lot of work to fix. Maybe I should try again? Any ideas? Should I move everything off of D:, unplug C: and try again? Thanks Steve |

You are confusing yourself by using DOS drive lettering terminology where
it's not appropriate. DOS assigns drive letters to partitions it sees at boot time in a specific order. This assignment can be changed if your boot loader hides or 're-arranges' the partitions in some way, so when you are using a boot loader you have to think about drive letters in a very different way. By default, Windows will be installed to the "C" drive, but whether this is the primary partition on the master drive on the first IDE device, or some other partition on some other drive depends on what the boot manager has done. If you have configured BootitNG to boot into DOS so that the partition you created on your second drive is seen as the first available DOS partition, then this will become the default installation partition for Windows. When you boot in some other configuration, the default (C partition will be a different partition. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Steve" wrote in message ... I can see I'm going to have to go back and reread my BootitNG documentation.
Thanks for the link. Steve |

Okay Jeff,
If I understand your answer, I can use BootitNG boot to my newly created partition on my new hard drive and I can install a pristine Windows 98 there. Then when I turn on my computer again and get Bootit's menu, I'll have a choice of the new or the old Windows. Right? By the way how do you get the previous message to show up in Outlook Express? Thanks for taking the time Jeff, Steve |

Yes - that's exactly the way this type of boot manager works. Except that
you'll already have the choice of which partition to boot to _before_ installing Windows - that's how you got BootitNG to boot you into that new pristine partition before you did the Windows install. So if you make the same selection you did for the install, you'll get the newly installed Windows. For the OE problem, look at Tools / Option / Send / Include message in reply. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Steve" wrote in message ...
