Thanks Rick, for that information.

That attitude reply was unnecessary. My reply was meant to be helpful and surly not meant as a putdown, don't be so sensitive. People make typo mistakes all the time, I know I do. Fill out the form again and see if it will take, if it says that email is already taken then great, so try some variances like see if you can click for a new password, etc, etc... if all else fails then try a variance to your name and sign up again. "Bill in Co." wrote in message Or an older copy of Acronis True Image (I'm not sure if the newer editions still work for Win98SE). v9 is the last W98SE supported version that you can install it to, however of course using it via its boot disk, the newer versions (v10, v11) will image/restore anything. Rick OK, good to know this, Rick! I've been using the newer version on XP, and it works great as a backup and restore method (using an external USB HD enclosure, for the backup drive - I only turn that drive on when I make or restore a backup). |

... Good friend of mine got GHOST 9 and then found out it isn't for WIN 98. He got GHOST 2003 with it, that is for 98. But I recall seeing suggested here, other drive imaging and restoring packages that people find preferable to the Norton/ Symantec stuff. Could I have a few suggestions? (I used to use PowerQuests's Drive Image 6 but found it unwieldy in that it required their original CD to do a Restore). Thank you. DriveImage 6, otherwise known as DriveImage 2002, requires a pair of boot floppy diskettes for restoration of the operating system partition. They (floppies) are made in windows after the DI 2002 program is installed in windows. The subsequent version of DI, 7.0, requires the use of its boot CD for restoration of the partition it resides in. Am assuming that the boot partition and windows partition are the same. And, am assuming the boot media can access the media the image file was previously saved to (USB, Firewire, ide HD connected to ide card can be probematic). In both versions, you can restore the non-windows partition(s) without use of the boot media. -- Dave Memorial day: In honor for those who served and died for your freedom of speech, exercise that right where you fear repercussion the most for your voiced opinion. |

Someone mentioned motherboards, someone mentioned Casper, another TrueImage. On that note, I found on an 865PE chipset board with early SATA that a version of TrueImage created image files whose restorations were unbootable for one reason or another. Also, with Casper 4.0, it trashed both the source partitions and created unbootable copied partitions on the target hard drive. -- Dave Memorial day: In honor for those who served and died for your freedom of speech, exercise that right where you fear repercussion the most for your voiced opinion. |

Perhaps they would have needed a newer version of either program to handle SATA (which is relatively new) properly, but the newer versions might not be compatible with Win98 - so that might be a possible explanation. |

Free version of Acronis v8 http://www.acronis.co.uk/mag/pcpro/ati8pe Rick (I haven't tried filling out this form myself, since I'm already a registered user for all their versions anyway) Completing that form merely gets you a reg code - you still need to locate the software. You're right but also wrong, Reb. Once you are 'registered', having registered for True Image 8.0 Personal, you just click on Registered Products on their My Account Page on their website, and there's a link for downloading it. Just a bit roundabout, but not as bad as most. Thanks for that - and to Rick as well. Have just downloaded it from their "lost your executable?" link. Previously I had used XXCOPY (for 98SE) but on the last occasion it really made a mess. I was trying to transfer an laptop drive image to a larger drive, so I ran XXCOPY on a desktop with the source and target (IDE) drives patched in. The target drive was a total fscked up mess afterwards. So next I refreshed (FDISK and FORMAT) the target and then used Windoze Exploder to simply drag eveything from source to target. Following an FDISK/MBR everything was sweet. Next time I need to do this sort of thing, it will be TI8. Sorry to hijack the thread. |

Also, with Casper 4.0, it trashed both the source partitions and created unbootable copied partitions on the target hard drive. In the beginning I was an avid powerquest Drive Image user myself. Absolutely loved it (and still do in retrospect) ..and have and used All their versions and at the time they never failed me - until after literally a thousand good restores of all kinds finally came the day that DI v6 wrecked things quite nicely, and actually it was on an intel 865 board now that you mention it (which I have three of them in operation) I realized that I was asking too much of DI 2002 (v6) to recognize unique hardware situations beyond its build date - which is understandable. Sure the instances could of been a fluke of one kind or another, but I was well aware and realized I needed something that was up to date with the times - which really had to happen sooner or later anyway. Besides, True Image's virtual backup image explorer compared to DI's explorer, is 1000 times better in all ways and has to be used to appreciate the leap in accomplishment and usable real-time benefits it offers which are too numerable to mention. What version of True Image did you have trouble with? True Image v8 works well with the onboard SATA 1 interface of the D865 motherboards, but v8 and the 865 (and beyond) does have a hard time recognizing certain brands of onboard SATA 2 PCI Controller Cards (which again were built after the TI v8 build date too) True Image v9, v10, and v11 solve those problems successively. Going slightly on a tangent here but because of what, imho, problemize all software makers is the thought and push that they have to put every frill and frosting add-on into their software trying to do everything besides imaging, from A to Z, and therein lies the bloat and subsequent problems that arise from that unneeded excess options that complicate what doesn't have to be, and Acronis's latest versions are starting to cross the line too. I'm I use these imaging programs for one thing, which is to Manually create and restore images, or backup image file searching, but every other cupcake frill on it I ignore and never even click through the options... anyway I don't want to get OT on the issue. Rick ps, btw... I still have DI v5 and yes v6 installed on all my OS's and revisit them from time to time. -- Dave Memorial day: In honor for those who served and died for your freedom of speech, exercise that right where you fear repercussion the most for your voiced opinion. |
