Programs running at start-up
I am running Windows ME. Whenever I add a program,
Windows puts an icon on my desktop and one in my taskbar. I would like to get rid of some of the taskbar icons. How do I accomplish this? |

The icon on the desktop is in most cases a shortcut placed there to enable
you to launch the program when required. If unwanted you can simply delete the shortcut. The icon on the taskbar is there to tell you that the application concerned is running. All, or virtually all, running applications place an icon on the taskbar. You may however be referring to an icon alongside the clock, if so this is telling you that the application is running, perhaps in the background, and being launched automatically each time you boot your PC. If you don't want this to happen then you need to check the configuration options/preferences for the application and uncheck and entry that tells it to start each time you boot your PC. A final possibility is that you are referring to the Quick Launch area of the task bar, that is the area next to the Start button. If this is the case the icon is the same as the one on the desktop, that is a shortcut that can be used to launch the application when required. Again, like the icon on the desktop, it can be deleted if not required. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP debbie wrote: I am running Windows ME. Mike,
I am talking about the icons next to the clock. I can't seem to find a way to remove them from that location. -----Original Message----- The icon on the desktop is in most cases a shortcut placed there to enable you to launch the program when required. Debbie, I covered this in my earlier e-mail where I said: "You may however be referring to an icon alongside the clock, if so this is telling you that the application is running, perhaps in the background, and being launched automatically each time you boot your PC. Perhaps it would help if you were to give some examples of application you want to prevent from running each time you boot your PC and maybe someone can help you by telling you how to stop them running. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP |

Mike,
Sorry to be such a pain. I guess I don't know where or how to begin. Where are configuration options/preferences? I am referring to icons by the clock for MusicMatch, Quick Time player, etc. which are also shown on my desktop. Thanks. -----Original Message----- Debbie wrote: I am talking about the icons next to the clock. I can't seem to find a way to remove them from that location. I am referring to icons by the clock
Yes, you've told us that already. :-) Where are configuration options/preferences? Within the application. Each application has its own layout, look for things like setup, preferences, options, etc. and follow them through. Sometime the check box can be quite deep down the menu tree. For example for QuickTime. Edit | Preferences | QuickTime Preferences, then select Browser Plug-in in the drop down box and uncheck the box "Quick Time system tray icon". At the risk of repeating myself, the icons on the desktop are shortcuts used to launch or open the application and have nothing whatsoever to do with the icon by the click which is an indicator that the application is running. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP debbie wrote: Mike, Sorry to be such a pain. Mike,
Either a light bulb clicked on in my head or you gave me really good instructions I'm really on a roll now. Thanks for all your help -- past, present and future. Debbie,
I hope that means what I think it means and that you've started to solve this problem. If so, well done. If not, please post back and someone here will try and help you. Mike M had this to say: My reply is at the bottom of your sent message: Debbie, I hope that means what I think it means and that you've started to solve this problem. If so, well done. If not, please post back and someone here will try and help you. But you're doing a wonderful job already Mike. Anyhow, I thought I'd post this to you. While it's always better to make the change within the application itself it's not always possible to do so. I've been using this for eons and thought that you might find it handy: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml LOL No, I'm not Mike Lin and I don't think he even knows me. I tell people all the time about the application though. It's probably in 1 out of every 20 of my responses to people actually. I use it that much and people like it that much. I just thought I'd add it to your arsenal if it was something you thought you could use. Galen -- Signature changed for a moment of silence. Rest well Alex and we'll see you on the other side. |
