Default Reinstalling Win98SE without original CD

Hello All,
I have the Toshiba Satellite 2535 CDS. I need to do a complete
reinstall of Win98SE, however, the OS was preinstalled and I did not
receive a disk to help me. I did receive the Companion Diskette and I
have my original books with the Product Key, but nothing that shows me
how to reinstall the OS.

I can only load my computer into safe mode now without any network or
Cd-Rom. When I boot up I get the Microsoft Registry Checker error and
then nothing.

I have been messing with this for months and can't get it to work so I
thought the only solution is to reinstall the entire thing.

Anyway, how do I do this with only my Companion Diskette? I don't see
anything on it that refers to the OS.

Thanks a lot in advance.

ps. Not sure what forum this goes in so I posted in two different ones.

Why not just pick up a retail copy of 98SE from Ebay?

Try Start Find from Safe Mode and search the drive for a BASE4.CAB
file. If you find it that folder should contain dozens of CAB files
and the Setup.exe file.

If you have them post back, you can re-install from there but post
back first for how to do it.

Default Reinstalling Win98SE without original CD

Frequently the installation files are on the hard drive as noted by Bill.
In addition to knowing if the files are on the hard drive, we will need to
know the location of the files and if the laptop has a functioning floppy
disk drive.

Is the setup.exe file also there and does the floppy drive work? Do you
have a W98 start up floppy disk? If not, you can download one he
http://www.bootdisk.com/

Once you are ready to go, boot the laptop with the floppy boot disk in.
Select no for CDRom support. At the A: prompt, type: deltree C:/windows
and hit enter. This will delete the Windows folder so you can do a clean
install. Once that is completed, at the A: prompt type: C: and
hit enter. At the C: prompt, type: CD win98 and hit enter.
And assuming that the setup.exe file is also located there, type: setup.exe
/is and hit enter. Follow the on screen prompts.

If you have a CD or floppies with drivers on them, have them handy. If not,
see if you can download drivers from the Toshiba web site.

The only disk I have is the Companion Diskette. I have a floppy drive
on my laptop, but I do not have a floppy drive on the computer I am
using now. I don't even know anyone who has a floppy drive. Is there
a way to make that boot disk with a CD?

Assuming Setup.exe (make sure first) is also there try this:

Boot to the Dos Boot Menu by tapping the F8 key when booting. Select
Command Prompt Only.
Rename the current Windows folder to Winold like this:
Ren c:\Windows Winold.
Then change to the Win98 folder like this:
CD \Win98
Then enter Setup.exe and follow the instructions. Setup may try to
install into a Windows.000 folder. Change it to C:\windows.

Make sure you have the Product Key. To be safe get it from the
current install, in Dos enter:
C:\windows\command\Find /i "ProductKey" c:\windows\system.dat
(that's an "eye" in /i)
There are 3 spaces, 1 before and after /i and 1 before c:
The ProductKey is 5 groups of 5 letters and numbers.

If you run into any problems you can rename Windows to Winnew then
rename Winold to Windows. Like this:
Ren C:\windows Winnew
Ren C:\Winold Windows.
Reboot.
Then you can at least get back into Safe Mode for any fixes.

After you are sure all is working well with the new install you can
delete the Winold folder.

Because you have no Win98 CD I would copy the Win98 folder with all
the CAB files to a CD for safekeeping as soon as you get into Normal
Windows.

Well, for about 30 minutes I thought this was going to work. I
followed all your instructions and it was moving along wonderfully.
Everything was installed, got the Windows98 startup, etc. Did all of
it's stuff and then it said that it needed to restart my computer and
it did. I got the big Windows 98 screen and at the bottom it said,
starting Windows 98 for the first time a couple of blinks and right
back at the Microsoft Registry Checker blue screen. Stuck at 0% and
then my computer shuts off.

I do thank you though. Your advice has gotten me much further than
anyone. At least SOMETHING was happening, but unfortunately, I'm back
to the Microsoft Regsitry Checker screen.

I'm really not sure what to do next. Anyone want to buy me a new
laptop? LOL.

Again, thanks for all the replies and if anyone can think of anything
else that may help, I would appreciate it.

Start the computer in Safe mode and rename the following files. Then
restart normally.

c:\autoexec.bat
c:\config.sys
c:\windows\winstart.bat.
