Default Error message re KRNL386.exe ??

Can anyone throw any light on what this might mean.................
I had just opened my Excel programme & received the error
message............
"Excel caused a general protection fault in module KRNL386.exe at
0002:00003589"

I have found an Application file located in Windows\System named KRNL386 :
Properties describes it as "Windows Kernel core component" : Attributes:
Archive.

I am often receiving Error messages when going to Excel & which tell me
"Excel will now close"

Glad of any enlightenment anyone can offer. I still have a lot to learn
about my Windows ME System.
Thanks.

Carole

I recommend uninstalling Excel and reinstalling it and then using MS Office
Updates to get the Excel updates.

It looks like a problem with Excel rather than Windows ME and you may
be better off at an Excel or Office group.
What version of Excel or Office have you installed?

I can throw a little light - it is always good to increase your RAM memory
chips to 512 or 1024 depending on if you can afford it or if your PC will be
around a while or if you can find it at a rebate price at CompUSA or
BestBuy.

Thank you Jack, your comments taken on board. I'll give it a little while
longer, as everything seems to be running smoothly at present - since I
disabled the PCHealth files. That was discussed in another thread in this
newsgroup - so thought I would give it a try. And thank you for the very
useful URLs.

Thank you for your comments Alan. Appreciated & understood.
I've now found the Microsoft Office newsgroups via the web-pages but I'll be
blowed if I can find anything that tells me the name of the news-server I
need to set it up in Outlook Express. Everything seemed much more straight
forward when I found the Windows ME newsgroup. There must be a different
server name for the Office groups.
I have Office 2000.
Have disabled PCHealth files & must say that my system seems to be behaving
itself since I did that !!
I'm sure I have enough health protection via my anti-virus & firewall
software anyway.

Carole

I probably misunderstood your post, I see you *are* using OE.
If you go to Tools Newsgroups, is there anything there that grabs your
fancy?

Carolyn Jones left Lancashire, England in 1799 and moved to S.C. then New
Orleans and became my ggggrandmother. Then all of us delete the temp files
that build up in C:\Windows\Temp\ and also in XP under the %username% temp
files which helps also.
