New video card installation - please help

I'm trying to install a new video card on an old PII 400
Mhz computer (WIndows 98 SE). When I try to install the
drivers, it gives me the following message:

"Setup was unable to locate detected device's PCI ID in
NVAML.INF. THe installation will be terminated."

The video card is an AGP card with 32Meg and nVidia
software. teh NVAML.INF file comes with it on the CD.

after I skip this message, it says that it loaded the
drivers, but I cannot change the display settings - only
16 color is available.

Any ideas?

Uninstall the old video drivers before installing the new ones.

Is the old video card actually a video chip directly embedded on the
motherboard, or is it one that fits in a PCI slot?

The old card is an AGP card also. There was nothing to
start with as the computer was wipped clean before I
installed Windows 98 SE. There is only the default
windows drivers.

How old is the computer? Is it an AGP 1 slot or is it newer? Please post
the specs for your PC starting with the brand and model number.

I am having exactly the same problem. I have a new ECS K7VTA3 mobo with an
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ running Mandrake Linux and Windows 98 first edition.
The drivers that came with Mandrake Linux 10.0 Official work fine with
my new e-geFORCE2 graphics card. The installation CD that came with the
card is supposed to work with Windows 98...but it doesn't.

From the error that I get, the knowlege database on eVGA's support site
indicates that I have loaded the wrong driver. But guess what? eVGA.com's
own installation software load's the wrong driver!... not me. It then
tells me to download the latest driver, and provides a link. So I clicked
on it. The first thing it does is ask me to select my Card Type from the
pulldown menu. Guess what? There is no e-geFORCE2 listed. It looks like
they didn't write a driver to run this card on Windows 98.

There is another place on their web site that says that they don't support
Linux. So they don't support Linux or Windows 98. But Mandrake Linux 10.0
Official supports them! Microsoft seems to be loosing ground to Linux.

So I sent eVGA.com support an email about an hour ago. I'll write back if
I get an answer. They say to be patient and wait about two days for an
answer.

Hi, have you tried windows auto-update web site, it should have the latest
certified Nvidia drivers [if win98 is still supported?] least its had last
3-4 certified versions for WinXP offered up for d/l and install for my eVGA
FX5200.
