a program i do not recognize
i noticed an icon on my desktop [usually hidden] for a
program i have no idea about--it is an executable and its name is '~'. any clues as to what it is [it's apparently been there since 10-26-03 if that matters] and if not, how can i find out without opening it? i discovered the date from its properties, and it's an archived file. perhaps this has something to do with decreased speed of late? this group has been of immense help in the past. help! thanks! allyson |

thanks, noel--you've helped me in the past. i did go to
the advised page and noted at the bottom that it refers to winxp and win2000. does this mean that this is not the fix i should use and i should go somewhere else? also, as a rule, i don't use the address book any longer, though i may have deleted entries. i guess that is 'editing', huh? thanks again! allyson -----Original Message----- The tilde file (~=tilde) is a backup of your Windows Address book created by a bug in OE - look here for details and a possible fix http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=830921 HTH -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2004, Win9x) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's or http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/f.../2001/Mar01/Ma r27pmvp.asp "allyson" wrote in message ... i noticed an icon on my desktop [usually hidden] for a program i have no idea about--it is an executable and its name is '~'. any clues as to what it is [it's apparently been there since 10-26-03 if that matters] and if not, how can i find out without opening it? i discovered the date from its properties, and it's an archived file. perhaps this has something to do with decreased speed of late? this group has been of immense help in the past. help! thanks! allyson . |

If you open Windows Explorer and navigate to:
C:\windows\application data\microsoft\address book ......you should see a file named test.wab with a fairly recent date. If this exists, it is probably safe to delete the '~' file from your desktop. If you do not have the test.wab file in the Address book folder, move the '~' file to that location and rename it. I'm waiting for the next Service Pack........g. H,
The user's address book is unlikely to be called test.wab unless the user has logged on to their system with the name "test". I'm waiting for the next Service Pack........g. I feel this will be a very long wait as no patches or hotfixes for Win Me will be released unless to patch a vulnerability considered to be "critical" and this one is not considered to be critical to the security of the system. :-( -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP heirloom wrote: If you open Windows Explorer and navigate to: C:\windows\application data\microsoft\address book .....you should see a file named test.wab with a fairly recent date. Odd........mine shows up as 'test.wab' with the Windows Address Book icon
and it is the recent address book with changes......and I have never logged on as 'test'. System name is entirely different. Maybe it is just old like me. The address book won't have the system name but rather the user name. I
wonder whether when you first installed Win Me you called yourself test? What pwl files do you have in the Windows folder? Is one of them test.pwl by any chance? -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP heirloom wrote: Odd........mine shows up as 'test.wab' with the Windows Address Book icon and it is the recent address book with changes......and I have never logged on as 'test'. Nope, never logged on as "test"....in fact, I bypass logon, always
