Setup hangs while copying files

On numerous attempts, I've been unable to complete a clean installation of
Windows Me. I'm using Partition Magic by PowerQuest, and DOS is installed on
the first 2Gb primary partition (currently hidden by Partition Magic). I'm
trying to install Windows Me on the second 2Gb partition, which Partition
Magic has set as Active.

For some reason, I keep getting a "Generic Installer Error". An error screen
pops up that reads "Message SU99402" and "Invalid GenInstall INF File
(0x192)". This error occurs at different times during the installation when
program files are being copied to the hard disk.

I've been unable to find any mention of this error in the Knowledge Base.
What is the problem? Any ideas as to how I might resolve this problem would
be greatly appreciated!

It appears from the SU error message that the INF file is "bad" and the
most usual reason for seeing this, assuming that the CD you are using is
undamaged, is that the hard disk is damaged in some way and that the file
required is located on a "bad spot" on the disk or perhaps corrupted in
memory. If you can access the file setuplog..txt on your failed install
(do this by booting to DOS using a floppy) have a look at the end of the
file and see if it gives more of a clue as to the reason for this error,

I would strongly recommend that you thoroughly check both your hard disk
and RAM for errors. You can do this either by booting from a floppy and
running scandisk or perhaps better by downloading and running a testing
utility from the disk manufacturer's web site, for example if your disk is
a Maxtor use Maxtor's PowerMax testing utility. You can check your RAM by
using a product such as Simmtester's free DocMem

FWIW, I had similar problems after using Partition Magic - it turned out
that PM had actually screwed up, and there was nothing wrong with the
hardware.
I don't remember whether the SU number was the same - but it sounds
familiar.
Which version of PM are we talking about here?? - versions before 5 are not
compatible with ME, IIRC.

Not having used PM since the late 90s I can't really comment other than of
course that the product has in most likelihood been totally trashed since
PowerQuest fell victim to the Symantec dollar. It might be worth the OP
booting to DOS using a Win Me boot floppy and checking their hard disk
using fdisk and then formatting the target partition.

I'm using Partition Magic, v.7. And, I've checked the hard disk, without
errors. I'll try one of the RAM test programs. Other than that, I'm at a
loss. I'll also try using an Me boot disk, and reformatting the select
partitions. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

PM 7? - is that one signed Symantec, or PowerQuest?? If the former then
you're SOL, 'cos Symantec screwed it - if the latter, you're still SOL, 'cos
Symantec don't have a clue (and neither do I)
The last version I owned was PM6, IIRC - and that was bad enough (bloating
was getting beyond a joke, and it claimed things that I could never get it
to do - at least on the system I was working on at the time)
PM2 was a wonderful program - but........
