Uninstall ME
A used Dell computer, no system disks, no ME install disk. It is running
ME, IMO it originally came from Dell with W98SE installed. ME does not appear in Add/Remove programs. How to cleanly uninstall ME? |

You cannot uninstall an operating system unless you a) installed the
operating system as an upgrade over a previous operating system, b) chose to retain that previous operating system when you upgraded, and, c) have not since deleted the uninstall files and those of the previous OS that would have been saved as part of b). If Uninstall Win Me does not appear in Add/Remove Programs either b) or c) is no longer true. Your next step rather depends on what you next intend to do but booting to DOS using a boot floppy and using the FORMAT command will reformat your hard disk, or at least your C: drive, and remove all usable traces of Win Me. See also KB255867 - "How to Use the Fdisk Tool and the Format Tool to Partition or Repartition a Hard Disk" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=255867). -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP ms wrote: A used Dell computer, no system disks, no ME install disk. I've noticed that mainly experts like ME and can alter it to suit. For me, W98SE was always pretty trouble free, so I will install it. This is a 700 MHZ Celeron puter, only 128 MHZ RAM, so it later would be only a minimal XP machine if I did that. I notice ME keeps only 2-5% RAM free, with only ME installed. I uninstalled lots of stuff that was on it. On my P166 with only 96 MB RAM, I usally have 20% free. Mike S |

Mike S, I strongly encourage you to preserve WinME, rather than revert to
Win98, for the following reasons (among others): 1) SFP, rather than SFC 2) SR (no counterpart in Win98) 3) better memory management (BTW, your comments your "free memory" are totally irrelevant to Win98 and ME, but that is for another post, later) 4) better swap file management 5) better system resource management 6) and best of all ... you get Mike Maltby, Noel Paton, Richard Harper, Alan Edwards, Shane, Mart, Rick T, Joan, Heather (Figgs), heirloom, et.al., and (once a year) Jim Eshelman to aid you when you are stuck! OTH, your 700 MHz celery box will run XP just fine for the casual, typical uses (I did maintenance on one such box just two weeks ago), but don't try to load Half Life 2, even if your video card is very hot! XP beats any Win9X, hands down, in far more ways than I have suggested that ME is better than Win98. Just so there's no ambiguity: carefully consider using WinME or XP Home, rather than installing Win98! This is a clear case where "change is good". -- Jack E. Mike,
Best of luck with whatever you eventually decide to do. I don't really like making "me too" posts but feel that I should endorse Jack's comments and that you would probably be better off sticking with Win Me. You mention Win Me being more graphic - the answer to that is to use Classic Mode (Control Panel - Folder Options - General where you will find options allowing you to choose Classic Mode for both your desktop and when viewing folders using Windows Explorer. For myself I hate eye candy and always use Classic Mode and never enable "themes" whether in Win 98, Me or XP. As for memory usage, Win Me has by far the best memory manager of any Win 9x operating system. Remember the old adage, memory is there to be used and that unused memory is nothing more than wasted memory. WinME has better memory management 64MB than 98SE, the "2-5% free" is
fine - it will be freed up as necessary Out of curiousity what are you doing with the old clunker ? Please let me followup by recommending that you use at least 256 MB for
WinME, and 512 MB for XP on the old box. If you do not use the swapfile very much, the box will seem smoother and faster. Using a 7200 rpm, ATA100 or 133 HD will improve performance, too. Just copy the current bootable HD to the faster drive and configure it to be the boot volume. Use the slower, original drive as a second, archive drive, but create a 2.1 GB primary partition at its head and allocate it for the swap/page file, to increase performance. -- Jack E. Jack
For Win ME, I've found it to work quite happily (for office-style use) in 64MB - for anything involving detailed graphics usage, then 128MB is a minimum (e.g. photo-editing with anything other than the inbuilt editors). There is VERY RARELY a need to go beyond that point, unless dealing with databases of one sort or another ( the most notable being OE and Outlook!!) For XP - 256MB is a realistic minimum, while 512MB will allow just about anything, with care. Using the slower of the physical HD's for the swapfile is likely to degrade the potential speed-increase, as (if the swapfile is accessed regularly), there could be benefits to running off the main HD, using a fixed-size swapfile instead. OTOH, if the two HD's are identical, then there's definite performance advantages to having the swapfile on a different HD to the main one. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Jack E Martinelli" wrote in message ... How to cleanly uninstall ME? Thanks to all for good data. Based on this, I decided to keep ME and work with it. I loaded one of my W98 utilities, and it tripped me up. Tweakui ver. 1.33 IMO would work in ME, but it does not. It really screwed things up. My Control Panel is gone, Accessories in Start Menu is gone, etc. Need some help: 1. How to get to a DOS prompt- see no way to do it? In W98SE, when a glitch occurs, I go to a DOS prompt, scanreg/restore, I pick an earlier registry to load, and go back to before the glitch. How to do that in ME? 2. What does System Restore do, and how to activate it? Will this help the situation? BTW, I've seen several comments to get rid of it. 3. How to get Control Panel back? 4. How to get the Accessories folder shortcut back into Start Menu? 5. In the Shutdown screen, in W98, I have "go to DOS prompt", not in ME, how to create that? 6. How to create a ME boot disk? 7. Now the Password screen is coming up, I know the W98 fixes, are there any unique ME fixes? 8. How to remove Network Neighborhood from desktop? Thanks |

It is a custom computer, and still runs fine. I use Firefox and Thunderbird, the only MS util on the hard drive is W98SE, use all freeware, nearly all noinstalls, even at 166 MHZ, it runs quick, faster than I see other peoples machines loaded with lots of big installs. I will hope to convert this 700 MHZ puter to run the same way. |
