IE ToolsInternet OptionsProgramsIE should check to see whether it's the
default browser (Is this checked?)

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity
(FileIdentitiesAdd new identity). Assuming all is well, import messages
from the old Identity before deleting it (FileIdentitiesManage
Identities).

Are you up-to-date at Windows Update?

Otherwise I think we've all run out of ideas. Re-registering OE as the
default and MailTo/SendTo didn't help. Overinstalling IE6-SP1 didn't help.
Uninstalling Firefox/Thunderbird and cleaning up your Registry didn't help.
The only thing left is reinstalling Windows, Kevin.

Have you re-established IE as the default browser in Win98?
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=284456

Yes

After doing so:

1. http://www.oehelp.com/oedef.aspx; then...

2. http://www.oehelp.com/oelnk.aspx

No

If still no joy, see:

SendTo and E-mail Links Do Not Work Using Outlook Express as Default
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306098

Not really the problem. OE is the default according to the OE "Tools"
"General" tab and the "Programs" tab of Internet Options, as well as the
registry keys suggested.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In Win98, IE/OE6-SP1 may be overinstalled:
First, close *everything* via CTRL+ALT+DEL except Windows Explorer
(includes your AV program, Scheduled Tasks, Screensaver, and going
offline). StartRunIE6Setup.exe. Select Minimal - Custom; Select all
the parts you use, including OE (but none you didn't originally
download) and overinstall. Should take about 2 minutes. Reboot the
computer.
Now, with AV and all other running processes still closed, check in at
Windows Update for additional updates and patches you may need.
No luck
Before reinstalling Windows, it'd be best to...
Check your system for "hijackware":
Help with Hijackware
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/Darnit.htm
CoolWebSearch Chronicles
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html
Run these tools in the following order with nothing else running in
background:
1. CWShredder (fix all found)
2. Ad-Aware (fix all found)
3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red)
Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe) is the preferred
tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**
[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]
Also:
1. Download and run Stinger (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/); then...
2. Update your virus definitions, enable Show Hidden Files
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...02092715262339)
and then run a full system scan in Safe Mode
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01052409420406)
with nothing else running in background. Note the files identified and
removed then find the corresponding page for the file at your AV maker's
online support pages (e.g.,
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...favorites.html)
and follow all Removal steps.
WinXP Only (WinME similar): If this scan finds anything, create a new
Restore Point then Disk Cleanup More options Delete all but the most
recent Restore Point.
So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
Thanks. I think I will wait a couple of days, though. We are expecting a
hurricane soon. I'll probably wait until the weekend.
Restoring Win98
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Before reinstalling Windows, it'd be best to...

Check your system for "hijackware":

Help with Hijackware
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/Darnit.htm

CoolWebSearch Chronicles
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Run these tools in the following order with nothing else running in
background:

1. CWShredder (fix all found)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all found)

3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe) is the preferred
tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/

or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also:

1. Download and run Stinger (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/); then...

2. Update your virus definitions, enable Show Hidden Files

(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...02092715262339)
and then run a full system scan in Safe Mode

(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01052409420406)
with nothing else running in background. Note the files identified and
removed then find the corresponding page for the file at your AV maker's
online support pages (e.g.,

http://securityresponse.symantec.com...favorites.html)
and follow all Removal steps.

WinXP Only (WinME similar): If this scan finds anything, create a new
Restore Point then Disk Cleanup More options Delete all but the most
recent Restore Point.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

The new identity did not help either. I may do the reinstallation, but

not
right away. I will wait until I have an afternoon to kill to start that
job. Thanks again for your suggestions.

I will try the Identity change. It is one area I have never explored. I
appreciate the help you all have offered. You obviously know a lot

about
the software and your ideas seemed very sound.

IE ToolsInternet OptionsProgramsIE should check to see whether it's
the default browser (Is this checked?)

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default

Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity
(FileIdentitiesAdd new identity). Assuming all is well, import
messages from the old Identity before deleting it
(FileIdentitiesManage Identities).

Are you up-to-date at Windows Update?

Otherwise I think we've all run out of ideas. Re-registering OE as

the
default and MailTo/SendTo didn't help. Overinstalling IE6-SP1 didn't
help. Uninstalling Firefox/Thunderbird and cleaning up your Registry
didn't help. The only thing left is reinstalling Windows, Kevin.

I'm nor sure what you mean by enabled. OE is my default mail and news

My apologies, I plead unfamiliarity with the group's customs. Also,

I
appreciate the link to the MS news server. I am using that now to
access this group. IE is my default browser and OE is my default
mail and news handler. I have reinstalled using ie6setup.exe in my
Windows Update files stored locally. I tried reinstalling again
after using regedit to change the IsInstalled values for IE and OE
to "0". Still no luck. I had tried doing them both together without
solving the problem. Just to be sure I went back and followed the
process twice, each time only using one program. Still the same. I
appreciate the suggestions. They all seem reasonable and probably
should have worked. I have read the suggested MS bulletins

carefully
and believe I am following the directions to the letter. I usually
print them out to be sure. I am stumped, but again, I appreciate

the
assistance you all have offered. Kevin

Please don't snip previous messages, Kevin. Doing so risks

being
ignored by those most likely to help.

Have you re-established IE as the default browser in Win98?
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=284456

Yes

After doing so:

1. http://www.oehelp.com/oedef.aspx; then...

2. http://www.oehelp.com/oelnk.aspx

No

If still no joy, see:

SendTo and E-mail Links Do Not Work Using Outlook Express as

Default
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306098

Not really the problem. OE is the default according to the OE

"Tools"
"General" tab and the "Programs" tab of Internet Options, as well

as
the registry keys suggested.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In Win98, IE/OE6-SP1 may be overinstalled:
First, close *everything* via CTRL+ALT+DEL except Windows Explorer
(includes your AV program, Scheduled Tasks, Screensaver, and going
offline). StartRunIE6Setup.exe. Select Minimal - Custom; Select
all the parts you use, including OE (but none you didn't
originally
download) and overinstall. Should take about 2 minutes. Reboot
the
computer.
Now, with AV and all other running processes still closed, check
in
at Windows Update for additional updates and patches you may need.
No luck
I went to the add/remove box and first ran the repair tool. No
help, so I uninstalled the programs. Then I went to Windows
Update
page and reinstalled IE6, which included OE6. It must have still
been stored in my temp files from before. I have dial-up and the
installation zipped through in seconds. The ALT commands flowed
smoothly through the menus, but with no results at the end.
Next I'll take a crack at method 2 on
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378 .
