Default Problem with Mouse Click / Double-Click

I have a strange issue that has me stumped... I cannot double click
files to open them from the desktop or from My Computer. The
work-around is to right click on all files, then select "Open".

I realize another work-around would be to configure the computer for
web-style single clicking. But there's other funky things going on.
For example, when I try to open a new file in any application's file
dialog open box, highlighting that file name does not select the file;
instead, I have to right-click on the file then select "OPEN".

Although Spyware has been cleaned up via SpyBot and AdAware, perhaps
this was the initial cause - but I'm not sure.

Registry ? Windows Setting ? - - Any assistance would be greatly
appreciated! - - Thank You, Steve Clements

Every so often, that complaint surfaces at this NG.

(a) I guess a good first try is... "Control Panel, Mouse, Buttons tab".
What is the L-Mouse button set to do?

(b) When you R-Clk a file, what is highlighted in the Context Menu?

"Open" should be the default highlighted. I recall I did go
looking in "START button, Settings, Folder Options, File Types tab", & I
could not discover where to fix the default there.

(c) Perhaps, go look at...
http://www.aumha.org/regfiles.htm
....& the URLs it links to for a fix.

Thank you very much for your response. Still can't figure this one
out..

(a) L-Mouse is set to "Normal Select" and "Normal Drag"

(b) R-Clicking a file gives a the normal context menu with "Open"
highlighted at the top.

(c) File Type associations are fine (and files open by right clicking
/ selectiong "open".

Still Stumped. But thank you again. - - Steve

I just can't recall whether the other threads about this led to a
solution. Perhaps...

"START, Run, MSInfo32, Tools menu, IE Repair Tool"

It produces a rather large "Fix IE Log.txt" in C:\Windows. IE & E
are basically one & the same. If this crashes, an over-install of IE is
indicated.

Default Problem with Mouse Click / Double-Click

Hi PCR: Many Thanks Again for your suggestions. And I think you're
barking up the right tree here. The IE Repair Tool was not perform
its task. Therefore, I uninstalled and reinstalled IE6.
Interestingly, it solved a different issue (files in dialog boxes were
not appearing in alphabetical order), but unfortunately the ole
double-click issue remains a mystery.

I've hunted around newgroups to see if there were any applicable mouse
registry settings - to no avail. But I truly appreciate your
suggestions!

TAKE CARE! Steve

Default Problem with Mouse Click / Double-Click

You are welcome. Well...

(1) Did you look for a Registry patch at...?...
http://www.aumha.org/regfiles.htm
....& the URLs it links to for a fix.

(2) Have you done anything in TweakUI? Then, undo it.

(3) I occasionally run into new things that may be entered at the
following Registry key. Do you have anything there at all? Here is how
to remove "NoRun"...

"START button, Run, RegEdit", & navigate to...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Exp
lorer

That is,
(a) Click plus signs, beginning at "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" & ending with
"Policies".
(b) Click "Explorer" in the left pane, & look in the right pane.
(c) R-Clk "NoRun", if there, in the R-pane, & select "Modify".
(d) Change it to zeroes: 00 00 00 00. (Use delete key.)
(e) Exit, & it may be necessary to reboot.

WARNING: Do not get carried away in the Registry. It is very important
to the proper functioning of Windows. Muss it badly, & you must boot to
DOS & "Scanreg /Restore". Then, choose the date of the last successful
boot from the five offered.

The rest of this is just informational...

......Start of Other things that may be done there.......
Right-click the right pane and select New, Binary Value, & name it:

NoClose To disable Shut Down.
NoFavoritesMenu To remove Favorites.
NoFileMenu To remove the File Menu in Explorer.
NoFind To remove Find.
NoLogOff To remove Log Off.
NoRecentDocsHistory To disable the Documents compilation process.
NoRecentDocsMenu To remove Documents.
NoRun To remove Run.
NoSaveSettings To prevent some few settings getting saved to the
Registry.
NoSetFolders To disable Control Panel and Printer folders.
NoTrayContextMenu To disable Taskbar context menu.
NoViewContextMenu To disable (all?) context menus.

Double-click the new entry, select modify, and add this value: 01 00 00

Default Problem with Mouse Click / Double-Click ***RESOLVED***

PCR: The good news is the problem is resolved; the bad news is you'll
want to punch me in the nose after you hear the problem.... Your
latest suggestion #2 aout checking out TweakUI resonated with me. (I
had made adjustments with Tweak UI hoping to solve the double-click
problem). However, I accidentally left the mouse speed on the fastest
setting possible and the PC just wasn't recognizing double-clicks -
only single clicks! In the Control Panel / Mouse, I simply set the
speed back to medium.

I wish I could tell you that a sophisticated solution deep in the
registry fixed the problem! But at least your emails kept me
motivated to keep looking at this.

Again, I sure do appreciate all your time, advice, and concern.
All The Best. - - Steve

Default Problem with Mouse Click / Double-Click ***RESOLVED***

You are welcome. My philosophy is any solution is a good solution,
sophisticated or no. And even if it comes through a back door! Really,
we both should have thought of that up front, when you said single click
worked, though! OK, then.

Default Problem with Mouse Click / Double-Click

Hi PCR: I posted a follow-up message last week but somehow it didn't
post correctly... I just wanted to let you know that the problem has
been solved and to thank you once again. After you mentioned TweakUI,
I remembered that I was trying all sorts of things to fix the double
click issue. I had left the mouse speed on FAST and the PC just
wasn't recognizing the double click. TweakUI was NOT the original
culprit of my mouse woes, but after changing the moused speed to FAST,
I could no longer double-click. I guess I was changing too many
settings (too many variables) to trouble-shoot properly. Once again,
thank you very, very much ! - - Steve

You are welcome. Well...

(1) Did you look for a Registry patch at...?...
http://www.aumha.org/regfiles.htm
...& the URLs it links to for a fix.

The rest of this is just informational...

.....Start of Other things that may be done there.......

Default Problem with Mouse Click / Double-Click

I saw the follow-up message & posted a reply. It is right above us in
this thread. Glad you got it, because I had only 12 "master posts" left
to throw at you! Anyhow, do you know of the double click test at
""Control Panel, Mouse, Buttons tab, Options button"? That is a better
interface than TweakUI ever was for that particular tweak, I think.

Here is how to connect directly to this site...

To connect directly to this site, copy the following into your browser's
Address Bar. After this, you will no longer need to connect through the
CDO or through Google. You will use Outlook Express to access the NG.

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...gen_discussion
However,
(1) At "OE, Tools menu, Message Rules, News", create a Message Rule to
delete posts older than, say, 10 days. Also check "stop processing more
rules".
(2) At "Tools, Options, Read tab", uncheck "Get xxx headers at a time".
(3) R-Clk the NG in the left pane, Synchronize Settings, set to All
Messages.
(4) Click "Tools, Synchronize Newsgroup"

(Now, it is a bit tricky. When I click one of those things, it gets
right to it. One really need stop it & get that rule in. I do believe,
it will then not download older than the rule specifies.)

Posts older than 10 days will not download. Posts that age on your
machine after the download are your responsibility to delete, by
occasionally going to that rule & clicking "Apply Now". After that,
compact: "OE, File menu, Folder, Compact all folders".

Colorado disagrees, but there is a cave-dwelling MVP around, who says...

(1) "OE, Tools, Options, Maintenance tab".
(2) Uncheck "Delete news messages x days after being downloaded".
(3) Uncheck "Compact messages in the background".
