Default Computer Freezes/Locks up

I leave my computer on all the time, and if I leave it
idle for a few hours, I come back and the system is
completely frozen. The screen is black. The only way that
I can restore it is to manually turn the computer off and
then turn it back on.

Suggestions???

Thanks, in advance!

If you have any power management settings enabled, turn them off/set to none, don't
even use Standby. Try setting only the Monitor to power down instead or try a screen
saver only. If all you are using right now is a screensaver, try a different one or
don't use any.

Hi Ann,

When the computer locks up have you tried pressing control-alt-delete?
This should bring up a window that shows what programs are running,
and if one of these programs is dead it might detail it as "not
responding". If you have one of these then it may be the cause of your
lockup.

Otherwise do you know when this started happening? Had you changed
anything?

Regards,

Neil.

When pressing Ctrl|Alt|Del, nothing happens. I have to
manually shut the computer down. My short-term memory loss
is in full swing...I cannot remember what I did when this
started happening, because I made several changes at one
time about a month ago. Installing AVG 6.0 Anti-Virus
System was one thing; could this have caused it?

Thanks for responding, Brian. I have the monitor to power
off after 15 minutes, but have "never" chosen for the hard
drive. I have used the same screen saver for a long time,
without any problem, but I will change it and see what
happens.
