98SE and XP Professional Stability

I thank PCR and my friend Jeff for all of their help in getting me back on
firm ground again with a clean install of 98SE and an over-install of XP
Professional. The surprising thing was that at the end XP Professional was
becoming more unstable than 98SE. Yes, XP Professional had the dreaded BSOD
(Blue Screens of Death) that were related to sound driver issues and 98SE
also had the sound driver issues from the Sound Blaster Audigy. Jeff
reminded me of a simple fact that I had completely forgotten about being away
from this newsgroup for so long. The fact about getting rid of everything
related to all the extra junk programs with the Sound Blaster Audigy and just
download and install the latest driver(s) for your operating system from the
in this case -- Creative Support web site. I also downloaded some third
party drivers for full DOS sound support for Windows 98 Second Edition for my
old DOS games. Life is good. The only issue I have is how to have the Sound
Blaster Audigy address another IRQ besides IRQ 5 which causes issues with the
Sound Blaster DOS emulation. Does anyone have any ideas for me? Thanks in
advance for everyone's help and it is good to see a lot of MVP's like Gary S.

remember back in the day when I was so scared of the Internet that I used my
roomate's computer to post and the posting always showed up as Art. I know
now that was deceitful but I am glad the group was willing to forgive me and

This may be normal. Win98 enthusiasts have long said
Win98 is faster and more stable than XP.

There are many varieties of Audigy card but only a few are
compatible with Win98.

You are welcome, though I doubt it was much I did or said that got you
back this far. Good going. As Philipson says & I may have said in an
earlier thread-- CAREFUL NOT to load XP versions of software onto the
Win98 side. Make sure you have a Win98 version for that Audigy!

As far as IRQs, usually BIOS & Windows will make the correct decision.
If they don't, it could be tough to play with. But it is possible!

It is an original old school Sound Blaster 1 that was the last Creative sound
card to have full compatibility with Windows 98. The sound works great now
in 98 and XP Pro. I am trying to have the emulation work correctly for DOS
games in 98.

You should be able to remove DOS emulation if you don't need it. If you do
need it, then I think it will have to use IRQ5, and it's unlikely that it
can be changed. Some very old cards needed the DOS installation utility to
set the IRQ used - if you installed it any other way you wouldn't get DOS
emulation. Later the installation became a bit more intelligent, but
probably locked you into IRQ5. Why is the use of IRQ5 causing a problem?

Well, it gave me an error message on boot at first but since then I have
tinkered with the settings in the device manager by unchecking the automatic
setting and configuring the device manually and now it appears to be loading
the DOS emulation properly. I will have to install a DOS game and see if it
works properly with the sound. Thanks for your feedback Jeff and you also
Gary for replying. I will keep you informed of my progress.

I see you have successfully solved the IRQ problem on your own. Very
good! That is tough to do going by what I've read, as it could involve
BIOS, Device Manager settings, a physical switch on the device, the
physical location of the device, & even proprietary software to run says
Richards! SO, let us see the result...!...

PCR, first give me a chance to try and load an old DOS game like Conquest of
Camelot by Sierra and see if the sound, mouse and everything actually works.
