Default Format hard disk

Thanks for all the replys to my first message. I'm sorry I
didn't give enough information. This is an old laptop that
my daughter is using. Unfortunately she picked up
something that shut the computer down for awhile. In the
process of getting it up and running I noticed she has also
collected some spyware. I thought that maybe after I got
the computer running it might be easier to fix everything
by formating the hard disk. By the way SCANDISK had to
delete several files before the computer finally got going
again. The other problem is that this computer doesn't
have a floppy drive. Is there anyway that I can set the
computer up to boot from a CD drive?
Thanks
Al

How do I format my hard disk. I have tried right clicking
it and choosing "format". I get a dialogue box that tells
me that I can't format the disk because programs are in
use. I have tried using the (control)(Alt)(del) to shut
down all running programs. I still get the same dialogue
box. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

The option to boot from CD may be present in the BIOS - set the Boot order
there so that CD is higher in the list than the HD.
