Default failed intnet connection with anti-virus sware installed

I recently installed Norton IS 2004 but couldnt connect
to internet to activate as everytime I tried to dial up
the PC froze. Intexp. fine once the antivirus software
uninstalled. After reading similar horror stories on web
decided that W98 (2nd ed) and NIS incompatible. Got
refund and bought McAfee AV 2004 V.8. Installed
yesterday and guess what?! Same problem - soon as tried
to connect to internet PC froze and have had to uninstall
the software. Please help - choice of running either
internet or anti-virus software is not a good one!

Not so easy to find Bob. Just spend 2 hours and nothing
really on the point. These Newsgroups are positively
Byzantine. If I cant fix this I may as well ditch the PC
as run it without virus protection. Are you saying that
other VP's (anything other than Norton/McAfee) will be
ok? How do I get my money back unless I can prove that
the problem is with the software and not my pc?

Err,thanks Sandi, I really dont think that your average
home user could cope with all that!! I'll get some
help. Is it actually possible to finally get Norton of
McAfee up and running or is it all a "wild goose chase"
and I'll end up ditching the software? Are these
problems common? Are there better virus protection
packages available that wont cause these problems?

Personally I wouldn't touch McAfee and Norton with the proverbial barge
pole. ETrust (also known as Vet software) is far gentler on your system.

I am worried that you may have some malware on your system that is damaging
Norton and McAfee. Perhaps Trend Micro's online scan will be successful for
you.

Thanks, tried Housecall but got clean bill of health. I
noticed that although uninstalling Norton, a file search
found several Norton/symantec folders/files. Should I
delete all these - even if on boot up I get system
messages saying that I have deleted files needed to run
certain applications?

Its hard to tell without the precise messages Peter. I can tell you from
experience that just becuase you have 'uninstalled' Norton, that does not
mean that it is actually gone in such as way as to make it safe to remove
their folders.
