Win98 PCMICA NIC for NEC Ready 440T?
Somebody just gave me an OLD NEC Ready 440T laptop to use for some light word processing. The trouble is that it doesn't have a NIC card. Given the age of it, finding a PCMCIA Ethernet card, either wired or wireless that has compatible drivers for Windows 98 First Edition is difficult. Could somebody please give me some suggestions on where and what to get for both wired and wireless Ethernet? I don't have a wireless connection at home, but I might need it elsewhere for internet access. For wired, fast ethernet is sufficient, since I only have a fast Ethernet switch. Heck, I've only got one device at home that supports gigabit Ethernet. |

Before you buy something, check over on driverguide, driverzone, or similar, to see if there is a driver available for FE if whatever you think to buy has none. You're looking for something like this [not saying this is what you need]: http://driverzone.com/device.php?id=40729 Or maybe searching NEC: http://support.necam.com/mobilesolut...are/notebooks/ Or Google: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&s...=Google+Search For wired, fast ethernet is sufficient, since I only have a fast Ethernet switch. It only has 96mb and a 250mhz processor. I'm trying to spend the minimum amount of money, which is why I'm using this old sucker instead of buying a new or used laptop. I only have the OEM version that is in C:\Windows\Drivers\cabs that came on the hard drive of my Dell Optiplex GX110. No install CD or retail product key (as I recently found out about 5 months ago). A friend gave me a copy of an install CD, but the product key I extracted from the registry on the Dell didn't work when I was trying to set up a virtual machine on my then-new Vista computer to see it it was my Dell that was the cause of the trouble accessing Vista file shares. I do have a copy of Windows 2000 Professional lying around gathering dust., but I'm not sure how it will perform on a 250mhz processor @ 96mb of RAM. Could somebody just provide a couple of links to a couple of cheap NICs I can order (even e-bay links) that will get me on the night school's wireless and my home wired network with a minimum of fuss? I know I'd need to install DSCLIENT as I can't imagine NOT having the same problem with Win98FE at night school that I did with Win98SE when I tried to connect to the company's server a couple years back. I'm just watiing until I can get the thing on the 'net as it's easier to use the network than burning to a CD-RW. |
