Default Does windows 98se have to be installed from the same volume?

I want to clean off with fdisk and format a master hard drive and
reinstall windows 98se. Can I copy the cab files from the slave and
have them do the setup (install to the other volume (master)? And if
so what dos command do I use to do it

You can Copy all the Set up CD and Cab to master, Boot the Computer and it
will install from C:master!

I do that all the time when I have no CD-Rom on a Computer!

no what I want is to copy the installer cd files to the slave hard
drive and then install them on a wiped clean master HDD. I thought
just the cab files need be copied onto a hard drive to do an install.
The computer has two hard drives .I guess I am really asking dose
windows 98 always choose the master active primary partition to
install or does it install to the hard drive that the installer files
are on.

Yes you can copy the installer cd files to the slave HDD,
Boot A: Move to C: or D:
in D: Setup click ENTER
and it will run and will it ask Were
But By Default it C:\WINDOWS

And Windows will always call for the slave HDD for the CAB we need,
But
You can Copy all the Set up CD and Cab to master HDD,
installer will put all the CAB on C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS and call it up
that we need!

By Default it on C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS is a Copy of!

Certainly not the latter. Think about it: when you install from a CD, it
doesn't try to install _to_ the CD.

As MyNews has reminded me, it does ask, defaulting to C:\Windows (I
think with a short timeout), and also the installation will thereafter
ask for the files to be put into (in your case) D: if you don't leave
them there, whenever it requires them (such as you changing windows
options, or needing drivers).

If you have space on your new C:, it's worth copying the files (you only
need some of them, not the entire CD) to it: for reasons no-one has ever
deigned to explain to me, the usually-suggested location is
C:\Windows\Options\CABs. (If you do that, the installer, seeing that
C:\Windows already exists, will offer to install to C:\Windows.000;
override it bck to just Windows, and ignore the warning that it will
overwrite - it won't overwrite the .../options/cabs directory.)

I would be pleased to so deign if I may. It's because of the default
behavior of .inf files and the installers that run on them, including
the Windows Setup.exe machine itself. If they can find a file already
expanded in the installation folder they use it instead of looking for
any more versions of it any where else but more to the point of one
being inside of a cab file. Thus if you run an update and it
installed a copy of the fixed file in the c:\windows\options\cabs
folder, then whenever you did an over the top reinstalltion of windows
the setup engine would use the fixed file to begin with and ignore the
original compressed within a cab file. And thusly keeping your
Windows supremely updated without falling back into a heap of broken
files, tsk, tsk.

ALL ms updates with fixed files write a copy of the file to c:\windows
\options\cabs folder in addition to installing the file where it works
and lives. The first I ran into that was when I set up Windows just
like the OP wants to do now with the cabs folder somewhere non-
standard. My thinking was that I would be safe from virus attacks
because they could not possibly double guess where I put the goodies.
After I ran some updates I see that I have a c:\windows\options\cabs
folder and it has files in that I did not put there after I
specfically deleted the empty folder upon first installation. Today I
remain a virgin from any virus attack (with no AV programs either) and
have resigned myself to being just another brick in the wall
otherwise. I have my cab files in the c:\windows\options\cabs folder
along with all the update files and I haven't done a Windows
installation in years. I used to do it every couple of months and it
wasn't by choice, I don't those stupid things any more that caused me
to need to and I never did open email attachments I didn't ask for.

The default behavior for MS updates is hard wired within them to send
copies of fixed files to c:\windows\options\cabs. You can certainly
then move them to the new installation folder and they will work just
as good from there. I just got tired of swimming upstream all the
time and gave up.

One thing that is required of a drive to boot Windows is that it is
set as the Active partition. Fdisk will ONLY set C:\first FAT
partition as the active partiton and you will need another partiton
tool or 3rd party boot manager to set any other drive/partition as
active and without the active partition bit set, it can't boot. And
by such manipulations you can eventually boot from D: or what you
want, but I've never gone there and done that so I can't speak on it
too much more. If any.

AeFdisk will allow you to set any Drive or partiton as active and/or
some/all of them. Just google the name and you'll find it. With a
boot manager program you could install and boot from several Windows
folders on various hard drives all over the place. I never wanted or
needed to so I never went there myself and I don't know how
complicated it would be to set it up.

May be or Maybe Not that not how Windows work

Have you herd of System Backup Before!

For c:\windows\options\ is the windows 98 Driver Cache
So for 2000 and up it is C:\WINNT\Driver Cache

the Folder in 98 is CAB and the Folder in 2000 is i386 by defaulting
Yes you can do a Back up to HDD Slave,
But the Right way is to do a Install all on HHD Master, and up Date it
first!
You need to Have at least Two Partitions C:\ is Windows98 D: Backup
Clone HHD Master to HDD Slave, remove and put a way for save keeping,

For it seeing virus Start attack on HDD Slave and Sec. Partitions first by
Formatting them, then move on the
HHD Master or First Partition!

By default virus start from the back and work foreword,
