Or better yet, always disable Norton. *g* heh I was trying to be nice, but yeah ;-) I must say I have been repairing windows computers all this time and never quite figured out what is up with that anti-virus package. It doesn't even seem to be capable of updating itself, what about finding viruses. And it caused me problems with everying from webcams ("Illegal IP 2.0.0.1! Blocked" ...and webcam couldn't be used) right down to trying to rid a computer of viruses it so wonderfully failed to notice (basically, I couldn't reinstall IE, I couldn't install Firefox [virus redirect], I couldn't alter the Hosts file to avoid viral sites and I most certianly couldn't get Norton to simply ban the virus from adding itself to it's Allow lists automatically [no such option]). Booting into Safe Mode still gives me the Explorer Invalid Page Fault. Also,
I'm not sure that Norton even loads - getting the error that the configuration file can't be found. I get that error when WINFILE.EXE is specified in the SYSTEM.INI file as well. Thank you. I had forgotten about MSCONFIG - there was no entry for anything
to do with auto-protect. I disabled all items (Acrobat Assistant and Epson Background Monitor were the only items checked). I had previously remarked out a path in the CONFIG.SYS file pointing to Symantec (Norton Ghost) - that's been the only reference in the startup files I've found that indicates anything related to Symantec products. After the changes to MSCONFIG and re-booting, I still get the Symantec error screen, and IE6SETUP still will not run. Thanks. I really appreciate you hanging in here with me. -- Wayne "glee" wrote: With ProgMan or WinFile set as the shell in system.ini, start the computer, then run msconfig from the Run dialog. Wayne,
You may want to try restoring a previous Registry, from a DOS boot, using scanreg /restore and then choose a backup dated JUST prior to when the problems began. Do not restore a Registry dated more than a week or two old, as you will end up with more problems than solutions. What did you do just prior to the original problem occurring, and when did it occur? Had you installed or removed any hardware or software, or run a anti-spyware program such as SpyBot? You may have to uninstall and then reinstall the anti-virus app to fix the NAV autoprotect error, which can be done using an alternate shell, such as ProgMan or WinFile. To get to Add\Remove Programs, you will need to run this from the Run dialog: control appwiz.cpl You probably would have to follow the procedrures he http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...t&prod =Norto Take a look here at some comments on your errors: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportfor...ssage.id=31138 from : symantec.support.win95.nortonantivirus.general: http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...ada2368ff032ed -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Wayne" wrote in message ... Glen,
Thanks for the info. Apparently, the problem occurred when my son was uploading an HTML file to MSN, which he says downloads a .CAB file to the local computer. Internet Explorer issued an Illegal Operation error and shut down. He tried this 5 or 6 times, re-booting in between. He then noticed missing icons, and the fact that other programs would not run. This all occurred about noon on Friday, June 10. He had run SpyBot about 2 or 3 days prior, with no apparent problems. Do you suggest the registry restore as the first option? Thanks again, Glen. Sure hope we can get this running again. -- Wayne "glee" wrote: Wayne, You may want to try restoring a previous Registry, from a DOS boot, using scanreg /restore and then choose a backup dated JUST prior to when the problems began. Yes, scanreg /restore would be the first option, running from a pure DOS boot. See
if you can restore either the backup dated June 9, or the June 10 backup if it was made at a time prior to his problem. The backups will be listed in rb###.cab format, and dated. The ###'s in the file names won't be in date order. To boot to DOS and restore a previous Registry: -Start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu (boot menu) appears. OR - Repeatedly tap the F8 key after the memory count to bring up the boot menu. -Use the arrow keys to select "Command Prompt Only" and press Enter. -Type the following and press Enter after each line: smartdrv scanreg /restore Of course, you will also have to edit the system.ini file to make explorer.exe the shell again, in order to tell if it worked. You may still have to try starting in Safe Mode if normal mode still fails, to uninstall and reinstall the anti-virus after that. Glen,
Thanks for all your help. I restored the registry from 6/9, and IT WORKED!! My desktop is back, although I still received an error from Symantec - this time indicating a problem with the virus definition files. I'm going to attempt to uninstall and reinstall the Norton Internet Security 2005 package and see if we can get back to work. Thanks again for everything. uninstall and DO NOT reinstall norton Crapware, get something that works

Glen, Thanks for all your help. Your help has been priceless!! -- Wayne "glee" wrote: Yes, scanreg /restore would be the first option, running from a pure DOS boot. See if you can restore either the backup dated June 9, or the June 10 backup if it was made at a time prior to his problem. Good luck. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Wayne" wrote in message ... Glen, Thanks for the info. Thank you. I had forgotten about MSCONFIG - there was no entry for anything to do with auto-protect. Click Selective Startup, and un-check "Load startup group items", click OK, and reboot. Now you should be starting without auto-protect. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Wayne" wrote in message ... Booting into Safe Mode still gives me the Explorer Invalid Page Fault. Also, I'm not sure that Norton even loads - getting the error that the configuration file can't be found. I get that error when WINFILE.EXE is specified in the SYSTEM.INI file as well. I could find nothing on the Symantec web page relating to this error either. I saw an earlier post suggesting an upgrade to XP, but I really don't want to spend $200 on this PC, and I really don't want to replace the PC until my son is gone (He works on web pages, and this whole mess started with him trying to upload a file to MSN communities ;-)) Thanks for all your help. What do I try next? -- Wayne "Brian A." wrote: "Wayne" wrote in message ...
