W98SE Shutdown
I have searched and spent quite a bit of time on W98SE not shutting down.
Had one success in that it will now restart w\o hanging up. Screen stays on the blue windows 98 when shutting down. Tried the patches Tried all of Jim Eshelman's steps and other hints. I have not tried spacing my pci cards as I have more than trying to go every other slot. Any other ideas, it sure would be appreciated! I will get this one, eventually! Thnaks in advance, Danny |

There is no cure. It's a common problem in 98.

Without knowing a lot more about your configuration, there is little we can suggest
beyond the troubleshooter. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Danny" wrote in message ... I have searched and spent quite a bit of time on W98SE not shutting down. Glen,
Thank you for the quick response. What specifics do you need? heh I'd probably need to be on your machine.
What is running at startup, what is running when you shut down, what hardware is installed, what software is installed, what type of Internet connection do you have, are you on a network............. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Danny" wrote in message ... Glen, Thanks again. Let me give it a go.
The cpu with the shutdown issue is an Hp Pavillion XL 766. The issue persisites whether the unit is on wireless, hardwired internet connection via line or not connected at all. Running MacAfee 8.0, & zone alarm at start up. Try to keep tings at a minimun using the old Startman program to keep tabs on what is starting up. Running a agp video card, pci cards for sound, modem and wireless. I have tried shutting everything prior to shuting down to problem solve using clt\alt\del, then stopping all unneccsary task. ....but what kind of Internet provider are you using? Broadband (aDSL? Cable?
Satellite?) or dial-up? Have you already done this? -- Click StartRun, type MSCONFIG and click OK. On the General tab, click the Advanced button. Click to put a check mark in the box for "Disable fast shutdown", and click OK. sorry glen, I hit return too quick on the first reply!
Some where along the way I m have upgraded or applied a fix, as I do not have the option to disable fast shut down, so it is disabled per everything I have come across. ... I have searched and spent quite a bit of time on W98SE not shutting down. Had one success in that it will now restart w\o hanging up. And that success came about how? As Glen mentioned, much more detail is needed and one to start with is how you achieved the successful boot. To help others help you please read: http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm -- Brian A.
