Default DVD player on W98

Since W98 was installed on my computer, I am unable to
play DVD's. There is not a DL for DVD player at
Microsoft. I did have the player on W95, if I use THAT
disk will I be able to DL the DVD player as it came
originally w/W95 ? I thought I had asked this question
before....but, didn't see it post. Thanks in advance.

Is Windows Media Player (WinAMP or WMP) installed, Granny?

Windows versions usually come with a media player but none come with a DVD
player.

When I got the computer (Gateway)it had W95...and a DVD
player. When I went to W98..no DVD player. I do have
a media player. I think maybe I should check for your
above suggestions. IF is not installed, does the MS
site have a DL for one....and which one? Thanks SO much
for talking w/me! Granny

Try PowerDVD 5.0 for playing movies on DVD if you want to buy such a
program.

Many movie DVDs autorun Interactual Player 2.0 for installation. You have
to allow it to install for a free movie DVD player on your PC.

If the PC was running Win95, I would suspect that the cpu, memory, video
chipset/card, and input/output on that PC would have trouble handling video
display from a recent movie on DVD. Probably choppy at best.

If you did not add a physical DVD player (this is not software) or DVD
burner, you will never be able to play a DVD on your PC.

The PowerDVD 5.0, is it an expensive item? My thought
is..when I had W95 on here, DVD's would play. Gateway
sent me one and it worked. NOW with W98, no way! If I
put the W95 disk in.....can I download it from that?
OR..will it totally screw up my system? Someone did W98
for me, and I don't have the disk. The Interactual
Player..where is that? Can it be downloaded on line?
Sooooo many questions for someone that knows NOTHING!
thanks in advace!

I got the computer several yrs ago. On it was (from
Gateway) Win95....CD/DVD player and games. My brother-in-
law rebuilt this a yr or so ago, with HIS CD for W98SE.
Gateway sent to me, all the CD's for "reformatting."
Since NOTHING in the tower is a Gateway product, am unable
to call their support. After all this posting and dumb
questions, I did some research and I DO have W98SE...so, I
was looking at this website
http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/WinDVDGold_Profile.jsp
Dave....can you tell me......is this what I need? When
I put a DVD in I get a message that says that I need a
decoder..to reinsert the CD. Now.....while I was writing
this, I tried to play the DVD again...and, it played. I
have downloaded NOTHING. I've been trying to figure
this out for 3wks. I have NO CLUE.

What you suggested is okay. I prefer:
http://www.gocyberlink.com/english/p....jsp?ProdId=28
Check system requirements and hardware support before trying or making a
purchase.

DVD decoder cards were available a few years ago, not sure about now. These
were developed as PCs could not perform adequately to display the proper
audio/video from DVD using decoder software.

The smartest thing to do fiscally is get a home DVD player and playback on
the TV. If you insist a PC, you may need a later/faster/more ram model.

My original win98 box came with a DVD player but it came on the disk with
the ATI video card software - not the operating system disk. if you have
such a CD have a look there.
