Wood vs. Trees?

No losers Mike, only winners - we're all winners!

Mart,

Oh dear! Why didn't I remember to suggest this. Seems you win yet again.

Guys,

I am going to have to say that the solution is irreparable.

While I did not try the safe-mode solution I will tell you this:

Swapping out the DVD recordable that could no longer read DVDs with the
brand new ones (3 different ones, two different models) led me to understand
two things:

That the original DVD recorder will not work again the way it was supposed
to.

That the new drives won't work at all.

That replacing any of the new drives with the old drive results in the same,
well, result.

The cable is fine, the drive setting is fine, the new drives are recognized
by the OS but will not read any media.

The old drive is broke, it is recognized by the OS, but will only read CDs.

I want a new computer.

But, always enjoy the good read. Thus my name.

And, you guys are both aces. really.

LOL. Sorry though to read of your misfortunes but I would still suggest
that you check out the drives using Mart's suggestion.

Unfortunately a new computer isn't always what one expects either. I
spent almost two weeks trying to get my new PC to work correctly at the
most basic of levels before I gave in and swapped out the motherboard.
Yes, I got it in one. The original motherboard was toast and having
replaced it all is going swimmingly, well as swimmingly as one can when
running XP Pro x64 when one has to hunt to find suitable drivers but boy
does that box rip! (Dual core AMD 4400 with 2GB of RAM and RAID0 and
RAID5 disk arrays). Rendering huge media files is now a bit less painful
than before.

Yes,

I think I've read your posts on another NG with regards to video and such.

Wow, is there really a Microsoft OS that is 64-bit?

Quick quiz: What's the only operating system that's 128-bit?

Answer: It's 4 years old. It works quite well. There's millions of copies
running at any given second. Give up? Playstation 2.

I hope you enjoyed my quiz. Most of the expensive UNIXs are only 64-bit
(HP, IBM, Digital), I don't know about OS400 or S390. But those only run on
64-bit processors (PowerPC) so, they can't be any *wider* than that.

Well, I think a new OS and PC will take care of my problem. I just have to
find a way to justify buying a new PC to myself and my wife.

Cheers, mate.

Wow, is there really a Microsoft OS that is 64-bit?

Yes. Initially only for Intel Itanium but earlier this year XP Pro x64
and Win2K3 Sever SP1 x64 were released for use with AMD64 and recent x64
Intel processors, The IA-64 Itanium version of XP is different from the
more recent x64 version and may even have been discontinued. XP Pro x64
and Win2K3 Server SP1 x64 are built from the same code base and under the
hood differ considerably from the earlier x86 versions of these operating
systems and also from the IA-64 version.
