Copy to HD2
I'm trying to copy windows ME form my 40gb hard drive to a new 160GB hard
drive. The new drive is formatted as FAT32, and windows ME can see it. I have copied all the files from C: to D: using 'XCOPY32.EXE /c /h /e /k C:*.* D:' but I dont know how to copy the bootloader over: when I make the new drive master and turn the PC on nothing happens. I tried running 'SYS D:' to copy the bootloader but it didn't work. I would re-install ME from my disk, but it's a recovery disk that was shipped with my PC and it says it cant restore to the new drive. Any suggestions? I am moving it to the new drive so I can upgrade to XP pro. Would I be better to upgrade on the old drive, and then try and copy the files across to the new one? Thanks, Louis |

Try this procedure of mine::
Moving Windows from one drive to another. This procedure will assume you want to move everything on an old or small hard drive to a new, larger hard drive. It also will assume the old drive is one drive/partition and the new one is one drive with two partitions. 1. Install the new drive as a slave to the existing drive; making sure both drives have their jumpers set accordingly. (Connector for the Master is on the end and the Slave in the middle of the cable.) (Different hard drive manufacturers have different jumper settings but the usual possibilities a Master, Slave, Single, Cable Select.) 2. Boot the computer to real-mode DOS with the safety boot floppy. At the A:\ prompt run FDISK and partiton the new drive. (Make sure you answer Y to the option to enable large disk support.) 3. Reboot the computer with the safety boot floppy to real-mode DOS and format the partitions on the new drive. (Make sure you format the new drive, not the old one with all your files and programs.) (Using the assumptions given above - one old to two new; the new drives will be D: and E:.) 4. Remove the safety boot floppy and reboot to Windows. 5. Open Explorer and make sure you now have a drives D: and E:. 6. Open Control Panel Folder Options and click the button "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck the box "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended). (These are mandatory or else all your files/folders won't be moved.) 7. Open Control Panel System Performance Virtual Memory and click the option "Let me specify my own virtual memory settings"; in "Hard Disk" select D:\ ; in "Minimum" and "Maximum" type in the same value and make it equal to the amount of RAM on your system. Click OK and select Yes and reboot. 8. When the desktop is back open Explorer; highlight everything on the old drive (drive C:\); right-click and drag everything to drive D:\; and select copy. (This could take a while depending on how much has to be copied.) 9. When the copying is done immediately shut down the system, open the case, remove the old drive from the cable, switch the new drive's jumper to the master or single position and put it on the cable at the end (Master) connector. (It will be either Master or Single jumper depending on how the hard drive manufacturter set things up.) 10. Boot the computer with the safety boot floppy to a real-mode DOS prompt. At the A:\ prompt run FDISK, answer Y to the prompt, select 2 - Make an active partition, and select the #1 partition amd make it active. Exit FDISK, remove the floppy, reboot, and Windows should start with no problems. 11. If there are problems you did something wrong but you still have your original/old drive which you can reinstall and see what you screwed up. 12. I have done this many times on multiple systems and I know it works if all the steps are followed. 13. If you don't understand what the steps are telling you to do then DON'T DO IT - ASK FOR HELP!!!
