Antivirus software for 98
Opera 10.10 will improve that 433 MHz YouTube playing machine of yours!
http://www.opera.com "Jack" wrote in message ... Guy, Thank you for the reply. Sorry about the multi-posting. I really like my 98 machine better than my xp machine. My only complaint is that my 98 machine is only a 433mz and is very slow in playing youtube videos. Do you know of any way to improve that? Also, I am using IE 6 and a number of web sites have said that they will not work on IE6 shortly. Any advice on that? Thanks again for your help. Jack wrote: What type of antivirus software do people using 98 use now that Norton and AVG no longer support 98? There are no "drive-by" vulnerabilities that affects Windows 98. Never has been. And most of the malware that tricks users to perform the installation doesn't run on Windows 98. So right off the bat, the need for AntiVirus software for Windows 98 is basically zero, and has been for at least the past 3 or 4 years. Norton Anti-Virus 2002 is probably the best and least resource-intensive AV program for win-98, and it can still be updated by downloading the Symantec Intellgent Updater package. This brings NAV 2002 completely up-to-date with the most recent virus definitiona and scan engine. If you can't find NAV-2002 on a torrent and you really want it - let me know. I can put it on a torrent or a download site. If you are seeking an antivirus package to perform on-demand scanning of suspicous files (that you might acquire from the net) then I suggest that instead of seeking an AV app, that you submit suspicious files to virustotal.com where they will be scanned by 40 different AV programs. My 98 machine still outperforms my XP significantly. Because Windows 98 runs all apps in i86 Ring-0, has no cumbersome privledge or security accounts model, and runs on the faster FAT32 file system, it's a natural result that it's a faster operating system compared to the bloated NT-based OS's. |

Well, those quit support long ago. AVAST supposedly will continue supplying defs for its 4.8 version through this year {supposedly}, though it supplies no support nor newer versions; several PAID AV providers offer 9X versions as part of their packages; ClamAV is free http://www.clamwin.com/; ClamAV is a good option. It does not supply "real time" scanning so any downloads should be manually scanned and of course full scans scheduled on a regular basis. Though that may be considered a minus... on a low end machine that can be helpful in a way as "real time" scanning of course slows the machine down |

HOWEVER, if Win9X users participate in its development by support and "hands-on" activities, supplying REAL input rather than merely complaints, this MAY be one application that can help extend Win9X usage. The potential problem is Windows user have become abusive to programmers who fail to spend large amounts of time on the GUI, rather than the actual internal workings of whatever application. Somewhere along the way, looks became more important. I'd rather have something with old style color and icons, a couple clickable buttons with the standard Windows box and menu, and works REALLY WELL [minimalistic]; than an application with millions of colors, transparency, and an extensive menu with pretty icons and looks like XP or VISTA. But one can look at what ALWIL endured in its forums and the complaints leveled against AVAST and its minimal "plain jane" interface to see what is important to Windows users, "it ain't da proggy, its da looks" and setup ease. -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.org/ref/windows-main.htm Windows Info, Diagnostics, Security, Networking http://peoplescounsel.org The "real world" of Law, Justice, and Government ___--- |

It's main peccadillo is that it is tough to use Explorer or the Toolbar until the update of virus definitions is completed. But everything is fine after that! That v.4.8.1368 is fairly recent -- so I question whether they really will ever abandon us lowly Win98 users after all! "Jack" wrote in message ...
