Default Failure on display driver update

"Pam" wrote in message =
...
Jeff and Brian - I will go through my procedure again=20
after work tonight to see it I can spot any other bits of=20
information. I did several scenarios, one of which is the=20
one that Brian suggested.
=20
ie,
=20
- begin by reinstalling the old driver. Everything works=20
fine - just can't make good use of my 21" monitor.

This suggests incorrect or corrupted update drivers. What is the exact =
make/model of the adapter?

- in safe mode, remove all display adapter and check the=20
monitor (only one, Nokia 445pro - reinstalled it in one=20
of the past scenarios - same result)
=20
- shut down.
=20
- start up - I see all the normal dos commands that load=20
the cd rom and the disk controller and the hard=20
drives

That is the POST where you are seeing BIOS detection of the hardware.

...I see the windows logo.

The BIOS has handed over the operations to Windows at this point.

The screen goes blank=20
and the monitor reports "Entering power save mode" (this=20
is immediate, there is not a period of blank time) - when=20
I press the monitor menu an error message tells me the=20
the connection is ok but there is no input to the monitor.

Might want to have a look in the BIOS at any power saving features and =
disable them for testing purposes. If no joy re-enable them. If you're =
not familiar/comfortable with the BIOS, then don't do anything without =
proper advice or you may have more trouble, one wrong move and BANG, =
computer won't boot.

From what you mention in another response:
quote
'Is the PC booting from the correct in the PC? Make sure=20
that the PC is either booting from teh AGP slot if the=20
card is AGP or PCI for a PCI based card.'

One the two cards that I am switching between is AGP and=20
the other is PCI. But how do I tell, and change, which=20
the PC is booting from?
/quote

You never mentioned 2 cards before, are there? If not you may need to =
go into the BIOS and see if there is a setting to choose between AGP and =
PCI, select the one that the adapter is seated in.

If you do have two adapters, shutdown and physically remove the one =
that we don't know of from inside the case and reboot.

I hear the system grinding away doing something but I=20
can't see it, of course.
=20
I tried to do the install from safe mode - didn't work=20
from the cd because the cdrom is not available in safe=20
mode. So I copied the contents of the cd to the hard=20
drive (D) and tried the install in safe mode from the D=20
drive. At first it looked like it would work - but I got=20
an ATI error message that said 'severe error - try=20
installing the standard vga driver first'.

Try it again.
In Safe Mode remove all Video devices.
Install the Standard VGA driver.
Shutdown.
Open the case and make sure the adapter is properly seated.
Reboot.
