Illegal operation
I was at my wits end. Trend Micro said to reinstall their
PCcillin Internet Security 2004 which I did and error
occured again. Dell guided me through the dirty install
of Windows 98 and error was still there. I was down to
the option of doing Fresh Install. The Director decided
to hire person to fix it. At least I could tell him what
I had tried.
He came and updated IE, determined that the system date
was in error and fixed that. He did this in less than
hour. I don't know how date got changed but now realize
that it was probably reason that the Trend Micro free
online virus scan would not work either. There was date
problem with that.
At least I was able to hand him MS security cd and he
applied the Windows updates. He did not know about the
free Microsoft cd but said he was going to order one
tonight.
I am glad it is fixed though. I ought to stick to
painting!

I would also think a lightning strike to do other than
this. You are
practiced in a Fresh Install, but it may be different
with the Dell.
Naturally, anything not included on the Dell CD(s) would
have to be
reinstalled afterwards. You must find a way to backup
all important
files/downloads, before doing a fresh install. (Some say
to do so before
even an over-install.) Did those three misbehaving apps
come with the
Dell? I can't quite tell what "Recover Hard Drive
without Format" is
saying. I do know, my Compaq QuickRestore CD(s) do allow
selective
restore of many Compaq drivers. Perhaps that is what
Dell's "Refresh the
Operating System" might do.
| Computer is getting "program has performed illegal
| operation and will be shut down". But I cannot do
| anything but manually turn off the computer.
| "This program has performed an illegal operation and
will
| be shut down".
Let us see whether DrWatson will say more...
"START, Run, DRWATSON"; now, D-Clk it's button in the
Tray.
What diagnosis is on the first tab? Copy/paste
it's contents,
using the menu. Close DrWatson, but leave it in the
Tray. It sits
waiting for a crash, then traps it, putting info into
the Diagnosis tab.
(a) "START, Find, F/F, DrWatson.exe". (Should be
in "C:\Windows".)
(b) R-Clk it, point to "Send to" & click "Desktop
(Create shortcut)".
(c) R-Clk the shortcut on the Desktop, & select "Cut".
(d) Open Explorer to "C:\WINDOWS\Start
Menu\Programs\StartUp"
(e) R-Clk in the R-Pane, & select "Paste".
Now, it will always boot to the Tray, waiting for a
crash or a D-Clk.

| I found post by Dell Moderator ChrisM about using
| resource/system cd for the Windows install. Computer is
| Dell. I have only installed Windows ME with formatting
| the HD first about 3 times, and installing Windows XP
Pro
| once after I screwed up IIS.
|
| I do not know what exactly happened since employee
called
| me after errors. I am a volunteer for the local non-
| profit organization. All I know another employee used
her
| computer to send email with attachment and computer was
| left on over week-end. Lightning striked electrical box
| but don't know if there could be any connection. I
would
| have thought lightning would totally mess up computer
and
| fry it if there was.
|
| I agree that something else must messed up for three
| separate apps to be messed up.
|
| Thanks for your input.

| What program do you have that is giving the wording
you
| use... "Refresh
| the Operating System" & "Recover Hard Drive without
| Format"?
|
| (a) Some say an over-install of Windows will lead
| to "DLL-hell". Have
| you done it before?
|
| (b) A fresh install of Windows can also go bad, as
many
| a thread here
| can attest. Have you ever done it before?
|
| (c) Those sound to be big apps that you mention...
| PCCguide, Mymail, &
| Quick Books Pro. If it were just one, I'd suggest
un/re-
| install that.
| However, as three have gone bad, I'm thinking it is
| something else that
| is affecting all three.
|
| When did this all start? What is last thing you did--
an
| install of
| something?

| | The error message is:
| | "This program has performed an illegal operation and
| will
| | be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the
| | program vendor"
| |
| | The apps are 1) PCCguide which is part of Trend
Micros
| | Internet Security 2004, it is in the startup 2)
Mymail
| | which is MyMailList 5.0.2.0 3) Qbdagent2002 which is
| part
| | of Quick Books Pro.
| | There are also invalid page fault errors with the
| MyMail
| | and QBDAGENT2002 under the details.
| |
| | Do you think Windows install will help? Should I do
| | Refresh the Operating System (dirty install) or
Recover
| | Hard Drive without Format (clean install)? Please
tell
| me
| | what you would do.
| |

| | Well, what are the three programs? Also, what is
the
| | precise wording of
| | the error messages. If there is a Details button,
| click
| | it, R-Clk inside
| | the box that appears, & copy/paste it here. (We do
not
| | need registers &
| | below.)
| |
| | I wouldn't run right to any reinstall of all of
| Windows.
| | If anything,
| | over-install just IE.

| | |
| | | (1) Hold CTRL as you boot for the Startup Menu.
| | Select to
| | | boot to the "Command Prompt Only" (DOS).
| | |
| | | (2) At DOS...
| | |
| | | (a) Enter "EDIT C:\Windows\System.ini"
| | | (b) In the [Boot] section,
| | change "Shell=Explorer.exe" to
| | | "Shell=Progman.exe"
| | | (c) Alt-F-X-ENTER (pressed separately) to exit

| | (TAB

| | | (d) Ctrl-Alt-Del to Windows running Progman.
| | |
| | | (3) In Progman, over-install IE, which
basically is

| | |
| | | If you are IE6, "ie6setup.exe" will be

DOS.)
| | |
| | | (a) In Progman, "File menu, Run, Browse button".
| | | Folders pane will be open at "C:\Windows"
| with
| | sub-
| | | folders below
| | | it. Otherwise, make it so.
| | | (b) Scroll down the Folders pane & D-
| Clk "window~1".
| | | Now the left (File Name) pane should
| | | show "ie6setup.exe"
| | | (c) D-CLK "IE6Setup.exe" to run it.
| | | (d) Skip to step (4).
| | |
| | | If you are IE5, "ie5setup.exe" will be
| in "C:\Windows
| | | Update Setup
| | | Files". (You may also use the copy
in "C:\Program
| | | Files\Internet
| | | Explorer", which is "C:\Progra~1\Intern~1" to
| DOS.) I
| | do
| | | not suppose you
| | | should run "ie5setup.exe", if you have installed
| IE6.
| | | This one would be
| | | only for those who never did install IE6.
| | |
| | | (a) File menu, Run, Browse button.
| | | Folders pane will be open at "C:\Windows"
| with
| | sub-
| | | folders below
| | | it.
| | | (b) D-Clk "C:\" in the Folders pane to go up one
| | level.
| | | (c) Scroll down the Folders pane & D-
| Clk "window~1".
| | | (d) "ie5setup.exe" now appears in the left (File
| Name)
| | | pane.
| | | (e) D-CLK "IE5Setup.exe" to run it.
| | |
| | | (4) Reboot back to DOS. Then...
| | |
| | | (a) Enter "EDIT C:\Windows\System.ini"
| | | (b) In the [Boot] section, change back
| | | to "Shell=Explorer.exe"
| | | (c) Alt-F-X-ENTER to EXIT. (TAB to get to
buttons.
| | ENTER
| | | to accept a
| | | button.)
| | | (d) Ctrl-Alt-Del to Windows.
