Reboot the machine so that any thing that may be in the temp folder that needs
to finish does so.
Delete the contents in the IE temp folder:
Right click the IE icon on the desktop.
Click Properties.
Under the General tab click the "Delete Files" button, put a check in the box
for "Delete All Offline....", click Ok Ok.

Open either MyComputer or Explorer.
Expand the tree to C:\Windows\Temp
Click once in the right pane, press CTRL+A and press DEL.
Close out and shut down if you have more than 1 video adapter installed.
Remove all extra video adapters leaving one installed.

Boot to Safe Mode.
Right click MyComputer.
Click Properties Device Manager tab.
Remove any/all devices listed under Display or Video adapters.
Close out and reboot.
Install the drivers for the one video adapter installed.

Hello again,

I've tried 7 - 8 different drivers from various places for this machine and
the problem persists. Shutdown and the settings are fine. Reboot and the
resolution and colour depths are reset :-/

Do you have any further ideas on this?

Thanks.

I've had this problem in the past and am encountering it again now.

The problem is as follows:

1) Fresh installation of Windows 98 SE.
2) Screen resolution changed from default of 640x480 with 256 colours to
800x600 with 24-bit colours.
3) Restart the computer.
4) Resolution has returned to 640x480 with 256 colours.

If you set the resolution at 800x600 with 24-bit colours then 'shut down'
the workstation, then turn it on again, the resolution is fine. It only
seems to reset when you 'reboot'.

I have tried 3 different graphics cards in the machine and they all have
the
same effect. Albeit they are the same model graphics card.

Has anyone encountered this before? If so do you have any advice or a
workaround?

Thanks :-)
