And as an added note to Jeff's post, regardless of which disk you have, back
up your valuable data as things can go wrong during a system installation.

It depends on the W98SE CD that you have. Some OEM versions wipe the disk
and install a factory fresh version of the software. Some will simply
upgrade or repair an exiting system.
If your W98 SE CD is a Microsoft retail full or retail upgrade version
then
it will preserve your existing system. If it's an OEM version then the
behaviour depends on who prepared it.

I have windows 98 first edition on a IBM 300PL computer
and purchased an disk with windows 98 second edition to
upgrade my computer to windows 98 second edition. I am
getting different answers to whether or not installing
the windows 98 second edition upgrade will wipe out my
hard drive and I will lose all my information on the
computer. Some say I will not loose my data and some say
I will. Can anyone help me? Thank you.
