Pc keeps detecting devices already installed

put finger to keyboard and
composed:
I have Win 98 se and every time I restart my pc Windows detects new hardware.
Usually it is the monitor, I just click cancel, but I had to remove several
instances of the monitor under device manager. Also, on start up, the initial
black screen in DOS ...
DOS or BIOS screen?
... which lists installed devices, I have two exact listings
of my cd-rom device. How do I correct this? I have a Packard Bell Legend
Supreme 1985 pc w/ 333 AMD K6-2 processor that has 3DNow! technology and I
recieve error messages that no 3d devices are detected when trying to run
some screensavers.
You may need Direct X.
Any advice for any of the above problems will be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.
