Well, what can I say? Such problems on PCs are almost always caused by a
virus or spyware. Because of the extensive, and often free tools to remove
viruses and spyware, that is the logical place to start.

As for the bitmap files in the Windows directory, I mentioned that you need
to use Irfanview to open them, and cautioned not to change the suffix
(extension) to a .bmp file.

Did you use Irfanview to open those files? If you did, then something like
this, is what you would see.

Also. check the C\Windows\System directory for the rogue wallpaper. These
are several of the desktop backgrounds that come with Windows 98 such as
Black Thatch and Blue Rivets.

Of course, the offensive wallpaper could be in any directory. This is the
XP Professional wallpaper I modified for my 98SE partition. I created a
separate directory for this particular wallpaper.

I can certainly understand your frustration. I have helped dozens, perhaps
hundreds, of people on this newsgroup over the past several years. If you
are dissatisfied with the suggestions in this post, please let me know, and
