Default Trouble retaining high colour icons

Try that Safe Mode delete once more. Did you "Show all files" in Folder
Options? There is something weird about that file, that it takes TWO
reboots to do anything with it. (But Safe Mode was suposed to solve
that.)

Also... this doesn't seem to be a perfect fit, but check that
"NoSaveSettings" is not set to 1...

Setting the NoSaveSettings field to 1 prevents your settings from being
saved. When you set this value, the following items are not saved when
you exit Windows:

Changed icon positions on the desktop.
Windows that are open when you exit.
The size and position of the taskbar.

| I may have spoken too soon, the problem went away but then came back
| eventually. I tried deleting ShellIconCache in safe mode but "F/F"
doesn't
| find it. I shutdown into DOS and found it listed as SHELLI~1 but the
"del"
| command won't touch it. I also tried the "Rebuild Icons" command in
| Tweakui, but that didn't fix it either. I also tried increasing the
| Registry value of Max Cached Icons to 4096, but that did nothing to
fix the
| situation.
|
| Any other suggestions?

| Icons Displayed Incorrectly in Control Panel
|
| The icon cache may be corrupt. Delete it, & let it regenerate.
| Shelliconcache is a hidden file.
|
| (1) "START, Settings, Folder Options, View tab, bolt 'Show all
files'".
| Also, UNcheck "Hide file extensions for known file types".
| (2) Boot to Safe Mode (hold F5 as you boot).
| (3) "START, Find, F/F, Shelliconcache". R-Clk it & select "Delete".
| Reboot to Normal Mode.

| Icons Randomly Change to Different Icons
|
| This is how to increase the ShellIconCache size. It may go as high
as
| 4096. (Well, some say 8192.) It has cured, for me, a sluggishness of
the
| drawing of icons, inside Explorer & My Documents (the small ones to
left
| of file names).
|
|
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\explorer
| Max Cached Icons 2048 (String value)
|
| 1. START; Run; Type "RegEdit" & Enter
| 2. Click the plus (+) signs in the left pane starting at
| "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" & ending at "CurrentVersion".
| 3. Finally, click the key "explorer" in the left pane (not it's plus
| sign).
| 4. In the right pane, R-Clk an empty area; point to "new"; select
| "string value"; type or paste "Max Cached Icons" & Enter.
| 5. R-Clk "Max Cached Icons"; select "Modify"; enter "2048" & click
OK.
| 6. Close RegEdit & reboot.

| | I seem to be having trouble retaining high colour rendition of my
| icons. My
| | desktop settings are for 32 bit colour and my desktop wallpaper &
| program
| | windows are rendered correctly but my icons are frequently
downgraded
| to 256
| | colour renditions ( very poor if not 256 colour) which are quite
hard
| to
| | see.
| |
| | Does someone understand where this icon colour rendition is
controlled
| from
| | and how I can stop it from changing to low colour rendition?
| |
| | Thanks in advance for your attention and help.
