DSL on WinMe?
Win Me can be connected to the internet via DSL quite easily with by far the
easiest method being by using an ADSL modem/router which handles the ADSL connection, can provide a NAT firewall and then connect to PCs or Macs using either an RJ-45 network cable or by wi-fi (provide the router includes a wireless access point). Al that is then required would be for the Win Me PC to have a network card or motherboard network connection and then use an RJ-45 network cable to connect the router to the PC. No additional software should need to be installed on the PC. It would appear that the Westell Wirespeed B90 is a simple modem with just the one RJ-45 post so this would limit the user to connecting just one PC unless they were to connect the modem to a router. Looking at the details of the modem it would appear to be quite an old model given the user side RJ-45 connection is limited to 10 Mbps and the ADSL speeds seem to be limited. In summary there is no reason why a PC running Win Me and with a network card or port shouldn't be able to connect to the internet using the provided modem however this modem wouldn't be my first choice. I always prefer to use a router modem because such a device is able to provide a robust firewall through the use of NAT (Network Address Translation) and also hide your connection from the internet and therefore limiting your exposure to the bad guys.. -- Mike Maltby KC wrote: I am helping a friend. I was wondering if it is possible to connect an old HP Pavillion 2950 (WinMe) to a DSL service (I do believe it has an ethernet card) The provider I suggest to my friend does not support WinMe, but they say there is no reason it cannot work. The provider use "We hand off a bridged-over-ethernet connection. In simple terms an ethernet connection to your computer or router. After you connect to the Internet using DHCP or Static IP's." The provider also provide the client with a "Westell Wirespeed Model #B90" DSL Modem. Thank you |
DSL on WinMe?
Hmmm... a little searching shows that Westell produce a number of different
modems under the B90 banner... the apparent latest being the 6100, whcih their FAQ says... quote This ADSL modem is a bridge device with a 10/100BaseT Ethernet port and a USB port. The Ethernet port is plug and play and does not require drivers. The USB port is compatible with USB 1.1 and USB 2.0. The USB drivers support Windows98se, Windows ME, Windows2000 and Windows XP. This bridge modem allows all traffic to pass through. /quote http://www.westell.com/faq/b90-611010-06-faq.html As Mike has suggested, I would cseriously consider replacing this with a 'proper' DSLmodem/router, as that last sentence implies that there's no protection whatever available in this beast. OTOH, there's also the 7400 (also discontinued) quote This ADSL modem is a NAT router with a four port 10/100BaseT Ethernet switch and a USB port. The Ethernet switch is plug and play and does not require drivers. The USB port is compatible with USB 1.1 and USB 2.0. The USB drivers support Windows98se, Windows ME, Windows2000 and Windows XP. This router provides NAT functions with the option to configure firewall and port forwarding. /quote http://www.westell.com/index.php?opt...9&Item id=135 which should be fine. You friend needs to find out which exact model he's going to be getting - and ask why the carrier is using out-of-date unsupported hardware.
