Missing ShellIconCache
Hello,
I cannot find the ShellIconCache file? either on my system or on my WinME CD. Although I have no problem with my computer I would appreciate some input as to the significance (or otherwise) of this missing item. Thank you. Ben. |

It should be in the Windows folder, Ben - it is probably Hidden (and may be
a System file) so check your Folder Options accordingly -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Ben B" seafarerathushmail.com wrote in message ... Missing ShellIconCache
Hello Noel,
An 'appy one to you. All unhidden, Noel. Always these days. ( F and F i.e. in Folder Opts.) I have a large shell32.dll which gets a mention in queer places on a Google search. Its 2.7MBs. of goobledegook though. I realised it was missing when I today combed through my system-as-current for the assorted tweaks I once had in place (removed at the last F and I in the Autumn - most replaced). One of which dealt with... well here is a link: http://www.beemerworld.com/tips/maxthrash.htm I forgot that one so went through and did it again except for the file in question. I have a 12sec boot-up as per Bootlog Examiner but my desktop shortcuts which have my created-from-bmp images always flash a couple of times as Windows finishes loading. I keep these in a My Docs folder - "Icons". So did you know, Noel, that WinME can live without its ShellIconCache!!? Or I am becoming... older and dafter? Glad you are working but its a bit late for you now - yes? Cheers. Ben. "Noel Paton" wrote in message ... If it is not a hidden file in the Windows folder, then it probably
doesn't exist. You won't find it on the CD. Do you use some other method to shutdown instead of Start-Shutdown that may be stopping ShellIconCache being created when you shut down? ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP Windows - Internet Explorer http://dts-l.org/index.html On Wed, 4 Jan 2006 16:17:22 -0800, "Ben B" seafarerathushmail.com wrote: Hello, I cannot find the ShellIconCache file? either on my system or on my WinME CD. Alan, hello and thanks for responding.
Yes I do use shortcuts for shutdowns and restarts - these: C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE user.exe, exitwindows and C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx 2 I will revert to the original and see if it works. But, Alan, what will having the cache do for my system? Ben. "Alan Edwards" wrote in message ... If it is not a hidden file in the Windows folder, then it probably doesn't exist. Hello Alan,
Just one 'traditional' restart gave me the ShellIconCache. What do I notice? More uniformity in the finalisation of the loading of my Desktop icons. I appreciate your sharing of the knowhow. Thanks. Ben. Noel, although I am uncertain as to what you were trying to tell me, I do have a suggestion for 'fat fingers' - take piano lessons! vbg "Ben B" seafarerathushmail.com wrote in message ...
