My MS Windows Media player version 9.0 won't run.
Uninstalled it, re-download from MS website then
re-installed...same problem.
What must i do to make my MS media player up & running?

I got 7.1. running on my 98SE system, but could never get 8.x or higher to
run, so figured feck it, and didn't bother trying again ;o)

What exactly do you mean by "won't run"? It won't play anything? Music
(CD's, Wav., Wma., Asx., Asf., etcetera) Videos, or both? Have you assigned
files for it to use as default? Did you do a regular default installation,
or a custom installation? Open WMP9 and click ToolsOptionsFile Types; see
what is in there that it is assigned as the default player file types. If
nothing is selected, it will have a tough time playing anything without
doing a certain "song and dance" (pardon the pun. G) Also, you might place
a checkmark in the box on the player page of the same options dialogue to
"download codecs automatically".

Personally, I find WMP9 to be a nuisance, along with it being cumbersome,
"nosy", and a resource hog. I still have it, but rarely use it except when
any other player will not play a particular file (rarely happens). It does
work on my W98se installation though. However, you might consider looking
into some alternative media players such as IrfanView (with its plug-ins),
RealAlternative player, (older versions, if possible), WMP version 7 (7.1 or
whatever) or maybe WinAmp. I haven't used WinAmp, but many people do, and
they assert that they like it. As for the other two formerly mentioned media
players, I do use them, and they seem quite adequate for my needs. They will
play most anything you can throw at 'em. ;-)

I'd say you ought to count your blessings, Steve. Seriously. Even 7.1
is a bit of an albatross. I never reinstalled 7.1 after reinstalling
Windows, as I still prefer 6.4 (with the updated codecs). (along with some
other apps, like Winamp and MMJB).

hehe strangely, I prefer 6.4 too......... unfortunately however, it won't
play a few of my video's :o( (tried updating the code's etc, didn't work
unfortunately..... but 7.1 plays them no problem)

Did you download ALL the codec packs? I looked on my HD and found ones I
had collected over the eons, called:
Wmp6cdcs.exe
wmpcdcs8.exe
wmpcdcs8a.exe
wmv9VCMsetup.exe

Who knows, I might have missed some. But I also have other media players,
like Nero and Neo. (For the movie files, I usually end up using those).
My most recent project has been trying to get my VHS tapes converted over to
DVDs, so that's why I have those).

By the way, I also tried out Media Player Classic (free), and liked it a
LOT, but it seemed a tad buggy (in one or two instances). Don't know if
you've tried that one or not.

As far as moving your VHS collection to DVD's --- is this a waste of time?
Someone told me burned cds will only last about five years and I wonder if
this (wisdom?) carries over to DVD's as well. This person said that
Hollywood uses a different more advanced technology that will not disappear
with age. Any truth in all of this or is it pure bs?
